Feb 2022 jazz folk duet collab
jc: Nancy to the rescue!
Little known tip outside of fawm: you can tell how far into Feb we are by the sleepiness in the fawmers' voices. If you listen closely toward the end, you can hear Charlie and Ella spinning in their respective graves. Thanks for listening!
Edit: slight mix fix uploaded 3/2.
NR: jc and I resurrected our tradition of late-fawm, late-night co-writing. I think this one might be semi-autobiographical for both of us. Fun making this duet, but now I need more coffee!
You’re the best thing that never happened to me
I’m the worst and the first on the list by several degrees
Your narrow escape by the width of the gloss on your lips
Might have been the only thing that kept intact your sanity
I’m the best thing that never happened to you…
I’d be lying if I told you that it wasn’t the honest truth
My getting away, more like saving the day
Might have been the only thing that kept you from throwing away your youth
You ran the other way when you heard how I was a cad
When you should have worried more about me turning into your dad
Oh and everyone warned you about getting in too deep
When you should have worried more that you would be falling asleep
You’re the best thing that never happened to me
You were good and I could have settled for adequacy
I’m the worst, you should be thanking your luck
Not just the stick, I’m the whole muddy tree and you could’ve got stuck
Good thing that you never ever happened to me
We escaped by a hair and it’s fair to say we’re happier free
(amorous skeedaddledeebop)
Hm, wanna live dangerously?
(jazz hands)

my funny valentine's on its head :)
love the premise and the way you developed it, as well as all the fun you had with it.
your voices sound great!

I love the way you both changed up the rhythm of the lines to make those mouthfuls fit effortlessly into the allotted space. It builds lovely and finishing this with a harmonizing duet was the PERFECT choice. I love how organic and improvisational this feels overall with that rocksteady arrangement repeating in the background. GREAT track!
@crisp1 Mar 2022
Really fun, lyrically and musically -- and then you started scatting! Awesome. Songs like this make me love FAWM all the more.
@danvaillancourt Mar 2022
LOVE the phrasing and word play. That opening stanza in particular was about the greatest thing ever! Lots of great lines. I like the last section singing together and ending scat section! Great collab and duet. *jazz hands*
@roddy Mar 2022
Great vocal phrasing and jazz rhythms. Clever and witty lyrics, having two characters tell the story is very good indeed. Lovely ending too.
@standup Mar 2022
OK, most of all I love the harmonized bit at the end and the explosion of scatting. Oh, and the car/motorcycle accelerating away.
Other than that, I could have written this! There are a few women in my past, like 20 years ago, who probably regretted ever getting tangled up with me, and they would have been happier singing this song. I empathize with both parties and I empathize the ones who were not so lucky.
Still we muddle through.

What fun ! I can hear the fun you both had making this, and it comes out in how cool it is to listen to it :)
@paulotteson Mar 2022
I love the exhausted stage of FAWM - all the fun comes out. Great duet - the scat singing amplified the whimsical theme ad made me smile. Thanks for this.
@nadine Mar 2022
These lyrics are so cool! Just because everybody writes about the best thing that happened.. what if not? So antI! And indeed that it's a duett. Cool idea.
@siebass Mar 2022
Great rapidfire vocal delivery in this, jazzy drums, love the duet. Lol, you can hear the exhaustion which fits with the lyric. Planned? Enjoyed the line about the whole muddy tree. Accent narrow-band vocals are a nice changeup sprinkled in counting in different languages. Skeedaddledeebop.
@kadmad202 Mar 2022
You two complement each other so well. A match that, contrary to subject matter of this song, was meant to be! It had me swinging with its easy-breezy vibe and lyrics that brought a smile to my face.
@eargoggle Mar 2022
What a nice clever duet...I like the best thing that never happened to you construction. And we end with jazz hands!
@markg Mar 2022
Clever and funny concept--self deprecating and a reverse "ah, if only if..."
Great jazzy arrangement. Love the ennui deliveries.

This is a cute and clever non-love song, if I'm reading it right. Full of great lines and turns-of-phrase, my favorite couplet probably being "in too deep/falling asleep." It moves along nicely and I like that it's a jazz and folk blend. Hope to see this performed live someday.
