Feb 2022 whispery intimate ballad ccwelcome
This is a rewrite of 'when the sun turns blue' which I wrote and posted in the middle of Feb. I wanted to re-record anyway for my upcoming album, for a few reasons. I wanted to write a bridge (which the first version did not have) and also knew I wanted a more personal and intimate lyric- kept about half the lyric from the first version, and the recording is way more intimate, with me playing a nylon-string classical guitar, then vocal overdub, then lead guitar (also the nylon string) at the end.
Rather then take down the demo and song posting of the earlier version, and since I had a placeholder here, just thought I'd add this now (March 2) It's kind of 'fawm cheating' in a way since the lyric is partially written in March, but it comes out of a Feb. song, plus its like song 42.. so i don't feel that bad, lol. The 'old' version is at https://fawm.org/songs/132405/ if anyone is curious.
Curious what folks think of the song... and yes, go ahead and say what's on your mind :)
What on earth can you say
When the sun turns grey
And connections evaporate
When the whole world has turned
Your calls, not returned
And your wisdom
It’s come way too late
Like the Scottish King of old
When the fates start to roll
And the walls fall into each other
And the trees start to walk
And the clouds start to talk
And you’ve somehow lost track of your brother?
Bridge
You’ve replayed the past over and over
You can’t change what occurred
But there is a place
Out there is space
where there exists some sort of grace
Embrace the moment, lean in
Yes its hard to begin
The one thing that’s steady is change
sometimes all you can do
cherish the old, embrace the new
sooner or later things rearrange

The one thing that’s steady is change
LOVE this line
I really love this melody, I feel like I am in a beautiful movie moment with this song playing, your vocal is so emotive, so invested in what you are saying. I really enjoyed this and I think it is a free for all once a placeholder is created. I didn't hear the original, but I love this song.

Your guitar has been just stellar on all your songs this year. Love that solo at the end. And I really like the gentle whisper, gives it a wise and reflective quality. "Your wisdom, it's come way too late." So true. But this song is indeed wise, as reflected in you bridge and final verse/chorus. "Sooner or later things rearrange." We can only hope sooner :-)

Oh, I know that line about replaying the past all too well. I've been having way too many flashback episodes recently, so this resonates, and resonates hard. I'd love to find that place the bridge speaks about; it's a lovely sentiment and we could all do with finding a moment of grace these days. That guitar is beautifully played, and sounds wonderful.
The up-close-and-personal micing of your voice really makes this song stand out. There's a lot of detail in your performance, including some noticeable mouth noise in places, but as the result has such a profoundly intimate quality to it, I wouldn't worry.

"Fawm Cheating" dear oh dear, spank spank [Kicks @frogspawn out of sight]. Okay, listening and being serious. The intimate guitar is very sweet and it's a light feel also. Amplified (oops) by the lead in the interlude. (One day when I grow up, I'll learn to play guitar.) The lyric...this becomes ever more necessary the older we get. At some point, realisation has to sink in that even barring accidents, one doesn't actually have a future..! The advice is given so gently and lightly, it might even sink in. It would be so easy to write this as an admonishment. That's what's on my mind (apart, of course, from coffee right now)

Timeless sound - it's that chord progression and the sweet guitar. And your voice is made for this kind of vibe (like the Sinatra, etc. songs Dylan recorded a few years back).
The lyrics also remind me of some of the Stoic philosophy I've been reading lately. So this song, musically and lyrically, really resonates within me.

Great lyrics here Mike. I especially like the end of the bridge. And amazing guitar playing as usual.
