I polished all the China
While you drank yourself to sleep
You woke up with full of anger
Took out all your rage on me
Sat there feeling blackeyed
Accepted all apologies
Lullabies of vitriol
As I tried to get to sleep
And you wonder (you wonder)
What caused these distances
Saw you punch my brother
While mother called me queer
You gambled away the money
That we really needed here
Told me you were leaving
Just to see if I would cry
Got a bad case of depression
And you left me there to die
And you wonder (you wonder)
What caused these distances
I made sure all the mirrors
Were streak free and clear
As I wondered if this was the truth
Behind your teenage years
This wasn't like the TV shows
This wasn't like my friends
I prayed in the corner
That you wouldn't drink again
And you wonder (you wonder)
What caused these distances

This is heavy. It reminds me of my wife's story in some ways. I like the guitar and the melody quite a bit. I like that vocal in the higher octave coming in, I think it adds a nice contrast and good dynamic. That's some wonderful vibrato. These two vocal ranges sound very good together.

Wow this is heavy truth. You definitely have a way with lyrics cutting straight to it. I hope that whoever experienced this was able to communicate it directly. I just love both voices separately and as a duet. The music has all been performed very well and written in a way that puts such a spotlight on the lyrics, but holds its own too. Very well done!

This is so sad. The lovely vocals and laid back accompaniment really work here. I especially liked the vocal harmonies.

This is musically really mellow and lovely and lyrically quite dark and sad. I have no idea if this is auto-biographical or not, but I'm sorry if it is; it sounds very hard. It's a really skill to write such a dark, heartfelt lyric (whether true or not) and make it work in such a nice tune.

,@seanbrennan Thank you so much Sean. I have to give credit where credit is due.. It wasn't my lovely voice but the voice of my amazing wife R. Brookes McKenzie, as well as the also amazing Mama Pills.

I know this isn't the point of FAWM... but I just want to say you have a beautiful voice, and really good command of it as an expressive instrument. What an awesome surprise when that first verse kicked in.
The switch to the minor mode was terrific, and the chord changes are like word-painting on the concept of "wonder."
I'm so sorry you had to endure the experiences that inspire this song. I hope this gave you a healthy place to explore your thoughts, and in the meantime, this is a beautifully crafted, well-performed story that may well help somebody else cope with a similar background.
