This started out as a bass groove on a ubass with curious rubber strings. The kind of strings that after one bar go out of tune so I grabbed a couple of loops and used these to lay out the song. I loved the sound it gave when amped up and added in some basic drums to build the groove.
The rest is layering on some sounds, synths and letting the latest layer form the next part of the song. So when I added a synth saxophone melody on the first part of the song I then led the next section with a new sax melody and switched up instrumentation with guitar.
Then I just went with the flow and sang some questionable falsetto vocals on top to get a feel for the song.
I then replaced my vocals with a trial of EmVoice (the vocal synthesiser). The trial only has 7 notes and I was lucky that these were most of the notes I needed. I adjusted the vocal melody to fit these limitations and double tracked with harmonies a female and male voice and added some extra ones at certain points. Exciting to try out this technology, although I’d need to spend a great deal longer to finesse and sculpt the delivery into something altogether less robotic - although I’m not sure I’d want to - there’s something in the sound that I like. These are the voices of my animatronic characters singing the song in a children’s diorama…
Lyrically, this is inspired by some of the greatest fairy tales which involve pigs, such as The Enchanted Pig and the Pig King. Why must love be so hard for pigs? And what if the pig form was never lost and they were destined to be pigs for the rest of their lives?
Maybe we are all forever pigs and the world changes around us. Maybe as we shed the pig skin it merely obfuscates the perception of others and the true us is still not visible.
Whatever the answer, I’m sure Hans Christian Hedgehog will have written and starred in his own version. If I made a music video for this song, I’d want him to direct it.
Honey, can I get some loving for my soul?
Honey, can I get some loving for my soul?
Honey, can I?
Honey?
Honey, can I get some loving for my soul?
Honey, can I get some loving for my soul?
Honey, can I get some loving for my soul?
Honey, can I get some loving for my soul?
I said, Honey, Honey
Don’t you want a little loving?
I said, Honey, Honey
Don’t you want a little loving for your soul?
But my piggy ain’t got no love
Piggy no love, piggy no love
Piggy no love, piggy no love
Piggy no love, piggy no love
Piggy no love, piggy no love
Piggy no love, piggy no love
Honey, can I get some loving for my soul?
For my soul…
Piggy
Piggy
Piggy
Piggy
My piggy ain’t got no soul

This has a great groove. Very catchy too. Had me movin' and groovin'. Interesting switch up later in the song. A unique and very creative song. Oh, and I love that saxophone. Can't believe it's a synth. This is really great!

Even if the song weren't good (which it is) the liner notes make it worth listening to this track. Great groove to the song-- it reminds me a little of the alterna-rap stuff in the 90s. And some of the melodic choices -- like in "my piggy ain't got no soul" -- just awesome!
