Feb 2022 collab fearlessflight2014 acoustic-bass national
Well. So @fearlessflight2014 sent me an amazing bass part and drum track to write to. I had the phrase "beyond the pale" mentally bookmarked from before February, and got a couple of verses and the beginnings of an electric guitar part. It was tricky, because there was so much cool stuff going on in the bass part; I didn't want to walk all over that if I could help it. Then I came back to it and emptied out the electric guitar part some, and added the National part before sending stems back to Liz. She then wrote and recorded the chorus and the rest of the backup parts, and sent them to me. I loved them so much I used parts of them to build the back end of the song, then re-did the higher electric guitar part to (hopefully) weave in and out of that. This is our third or fourth (?) collaboration over several FAWMs and definitely this has felt like the most collaborative one yet. While I'm hoping to get one more thing posted shortly, I'm beyond pleased that this is the track that gets me to 14, and that Liz gets the last word on it :-).
:
@hamiltonpoolhall’s music is one of best things about FAWM for me. I look forward to every time I get to press play on his profile. His rich, clear, warm guitar sounds, his MONSTER groove and his witty insightful lyrics. It kills me that I get his newsletter but may never get to see him play live in-person because Texas USA and Trentham Australia are on opposite ends of the earth.
This FAWM has been hard (and the 3 years before the HARDEST of my life) so this this song made me cry when I first heard David’s verses singing out. He’s done that rare magical thing with the lyric where it’s simultaneously specific and intimate yet everyone who is listening feels like it is speaking to them directly. I had more parts in my head than what I had time to record but it works fine like this- and is maybe more appropriate to be singing more sparsely in that low breathier range. More room for those great guitars! To get to make a song like this with someone I admire and respect so much is just so gratifying and humbling. Thank you!
@fearlessflight2014 very diplomatically observed that I'd placed one set of her background vocals in the wrong place vis-a-vis the chord progression. That's now fixed! I will also take this opportunity to say that the admiration and gratitude expressed above is entirely mutual; I routinely make a beeline for her page when I see she's posted something new, and have done so since first discovering her badassedly-musical bass playing, breathtaking singing and poetic, empathetic and beautiful lyric writing.
I want to bring you back from
Beyond the pale
Where you’ve been drifting like
A ship without a sail
Back from the wilderness you
Stumbled into
I want to bring you back
Everyone misses you
Don’t fight it
You know you’re not alright and
I want to bring you back
Don’t resist it
I’m gonna be persistent
Let me bring you back
I want to bring you back
In from the night
Wrap you in skins and warm you
By the firelight
Wrap you in all the love you
Left behind
I want to bring you back
You were so hard to find
Don’t fight it
You know you’re not alright and
I want to bring you back
Don’t resist it
I’m gonna be persistent
Let me bring you back
Bring you back

mmm, perfect for a late night at a club - with a laid-back shine to cut through smoke and dizziness alike.
wonderfully chill sounds and economical use of your gifts.
do we have to wait a year just to bring you back?

Sweet collab! Love the switching up singing duties for verses and the cool harmonies. Great upright groove and slinky guitar lines. Great listen, super soulful and grooving. Love it.
@davidtaro Mar 2022
One of my favourite songs this FAWM. I love pretty much everything about it. But highlights… the dynamic contrast between David’s bluesy verses and Liz’s soulful choruses. That bass line. Wow. The guitar work throughout, which is just so classy. It feels like a 70s song you’ve unearthed and now wonder how you ever lived without. Thanks guys!
@kahlo2013 Mar 2022
Delicious song of desire and longing. Really wonderful jazzy groove with the bass and drums and wonderful guitar. The background vocals are lovely and perfect with the gorgeous clear melody delivery. These lyrics are so well crafted and relatable. Love this song!
@andygetch Mar 2022
Oh this is soooooo juicy! Sweet guitar and bass. The verse and chorus vocals make such a great duet. Wonderful layering, this is 70's FM radio fabulous!
@standup Mar 2022
Love that bass part. Thanks for letting that really define the song.
Great backing vocals from Liz, too.
I like the idea of bringing somebody back. You know they were the one, but they're gone, and maybe there's a chance to bring this back.
Those guitar lead punctuations are really, really nice. The right channel stuff, just lovely. The lead around 2:00 is good too, but I like the pickin' on the right.
Dang those backing vocals are great.
@roddy Mar 2022
Amazing good. Everything is really high quality. I could listen to you music for hours.
@timfatchen Mar 2022
Just magic. You don't really want an essay on how cool and good and beautiful this is, do you? Perhaps I could write a diatribe on nto being able to download it but I'll wait for the album on which without doubt this will (must) appear.
@audrey Mar 2022
Mmm, this is delicious. A fabulous melody performed with feeling. Love that deep bass line. Is that a double bass? it gives it a lovely bluesy jazz feel. Sooo good!
@katestantonsings Mar 2022
Really like the lyrics, background oohs and vocals. Great reverb on the vocal. It makes the listener feel like this is live between you two. This is such a good chill song. Great guitar work as well. Catchy too. #Tit4Tat
@bethdesombre Mar 2022
What a fantastic collaboration! Love the grove, and how the chorus lands. What the "you" is being brought back from transitions nicely closer and closer in throughout the song -- nice.
@crutherford Mar 2022
woah. gorgeous groove here
stunning harmonies.
what a vibe,
this is delicious.
@nancyrost Mar 2022
Now this is a groove I am happy to sink into. And every time it hits that flat-five it's the perfect tang of sour. Love being able to hear lots of the bass slinking around the guitar work. A supportive message, to boot - the kind of thing I'd want to hear when beyond the pale.
@guatecoop Mar 2022
Oh GOOD, I'm not the only one who puts things in the wrong places in varying degrees, though isn't it amazing that the parts sound fabulous even in a place that wasn't intended!?!?! This song is rich, deep, and a joy to listen to. Loads of details that are so musical that they just meld into the whole. I had to listen to this a couple of times to "get" all of it, as I felt like I missed some because I was focusing on others. This is a great collab. Very well done!
@coolparadiso Feb 2022
Delicate and beautiful! Great backing! Love the ease and space this has! Top notch vocals! Top stuff
We would bring you two back anytime
@resonut123 Feb 2022
This collab is simply sumptuous!
Nice Jazzy Bluesy groove on this.
Vocals, Bass, National and electric guitar really hit the mark.
You Both brought your "A" game, thanks for bringing it back!
@richaaaay Feb 2022
So much to like here. Those harmonies are sweet, the chorus sweeter than sweet. Instrumentation…perfect. From the tambourine to the tasty electric guitar fills and the bass. Vocals & lyrics, the composition, the mix…ok…what am I missing? Love this! Wonderful collaboration…do more!
@mikeskliar Feb 2022
wow and double wow- two of my favorite fawmers, doing something even better then the sum of the parts--- really fantastic on every level, of course! there's so much I could say about this, but i'd rather just let it all play! You two need to do an entire album together (and this being one of the tracks for sure)
(one little posting thing- i think the lyrics posted are just the verses, and not the chorus? )
