Feb 2022 acoustic folk one take
I sort of promised, a few songs ago, that I'd try to write one that is more upbeat and cheery than that other songs I've done so far. It looks like I'm going in the other direction, though. Oh well, there's always next year. Or, maybe 11th hour tonight.
Platitudes
Are plenty
If you got em
Go on and bring em
Insults
are a dime a dozen
If I have to
I can sling em
And the hours go by
The days they fly
The years unfold
We all get old
Madmen
Who want power
For no reason
For no rhyme
People
Let them get there
Without thinking
All the time
And everybody knows
That the blood will flow
No matter what you say
At the end of the day
Talk is cheap
It don’t cost nothin’
But a price is paid
When you’re not thinking
Rhetoric
Hyperbole
Weighing you down
When the ship is sinkin’
Better watch your mouth
Before things go south
Though it might seem strange
Nobody’s gonna change

Always impressed by one-take acoustic. A lot of sad truths in this. Appropriate right now. If depressing. But I think I'll download this one too. May some upbeat times come further down the track but...

I love simple and direct--like this song.
That's all.

Nothing to regret in writing this song, you're telling the times.
I like the parallel elements like "if you got em / if I have to".
Also it's kind of neat how the focus moves from "you/I" to "madmen/people" to "everybody" and then finally "nobody."
And "not thinking" is the line on which that focus travels.

The acoustic guitar and vocal sound really good.
And intriguing lyric with a lot of great lines in there!
For some reason this reminds me of older John Prine?
