Feb 2022 piano ballad collab friendship acousticbass
@fearlessflight:
Tim sent me this beautiful piano piece that I have to admit to butchering a little with cutting and pasting to get a form that flowed for me once I started writing. He gave me a melody too which I used a little bit here and there, But I was hearing a melody that crossed the piano part more so this is what resulted. It's written for a dear friend, the first person to give me really useful songwriting critique while at the same time affirming me as a writer. He lives all the way over the ocean in North Carolina and is the most incredibly sweet man and wonderful songwriter. Some days I miss him terribly.
@timfatchen:
Liz asked for something hopeful/optimistic even with a struggle to get there. So I tried something and sent a short form over. She liked it, so i did some smart butchery and sent an extended version. This is why I don't blink at so-called "butchery" needed to fit the great lyric. In fact I'd have to go back to the transcription even to detect it! Liz worries too much! I'd tick the "artist favourite" box but she already has. (!)
Missing You
Missing you again
Like being lost on a windswept plain
No one has your grace
Or that gentle knowing smile that lights your face
No one sets my heart at ease like you
A kindness that shines through everything you do
I get to be myself and it pleases you
So easy being me with you
Missing you again
It happens every time I need a friend
The warmth that fills your voice
Transforms my wildest fears to tears of joy
No one gets my mind and can tease like you
We laugh away the silly traps we fall into
and you can hold such space for the darkest of truths
I’m safe and unafraid with you
You widen my view of life
And everything is possible with you
You quench my thirsty soul
And once again my beauty is in bloom
Missing you again
It’s the sweetest and the deepest pain
Longing for the day
That we feel the same warm breeze
As we embrace
No one sets my heart at ease like you
A kindness that shines through everything you do
I get to be myself and it pleases you
So easy being me with you
I’m missing you again

You should get this song to Barbara Streisand's agent. I can imagine her (or Judy Collins) doing a fine version of this. They probably wouldn't be as good as this original, but hey you might be able to retire on the proceeds ;-)
@karlsburg25 Mar 2022
Ahhh guys its getting towards the end of my listening period and its still so beautiful to hear such beautiful collabs. So full of hope and melencholy at the same time. Really well done.Zero butchery on show here. Simply two amazing artists coming together in musical perfection.
@leepat Mar 2022
your voice really shines upon that warm piano bed - great emotive ballad you've created.
the sparkling melody and earnest lyrics are just right for this.
lost on a windswept plain, sweetest and deepest pain - just wonderful.
bravo!
@liz561 Mar 2022
Love the contrast of the flowing melody with the contrast of the rhythm of the piano parts' syncopation feel. Beautiful singing.
@nancycunning Mar 2022
Oh, I love the melancholy delight you fill this song with. What a great collaboration.
@jaegerin Mar 2022
This is gorgeous. Beautiful lyrics, beautifully put together.
@sailingmagpie Mar 2022
Wow, this is stunning. Everything is top notch here - great piano work, excellent lyrics and those vocals are just dreamy especially when you slide up into the tip register. Great collab!
@rayboneor Mar 2022
You've really captured the essence of this sweet sort of pain. Yes, there's that desolation of the wind-swept plain, but also the joy of knowing that you have this beautiful love. That vocal melody really sticks in one's head, and I love the warmth of the piano as it rolls around
@berty38 Mar 2022
I love @billwhite51 ’s description of this as a second act showstopper. I was thinking the same thing. This song has the emotional impact of Back to Before from Ragtime, as the first thing I thought of. But so many more pieces that draw the audience into the heart of the singer, in this case you, Liz. I bet your friend will be deeply touched by this.
@richaaaay Mar 2022
Such a heartwarming sentiment to this tribute to a dear friend. It oozes authenticity and sincerity. The music is wonderful but the words take the prize.
@auditasum Mar 2022
Dream collab. "Hopeful with a struggle to get there" is exactly right. This is sonically light and airy but the lyrics add depth.
@billwhite51 Mar 2022
liz, you have a knack for the second act showstopper, and this would certainly bring me to my feet applauding. and tum makes for a perfect collaborator. you always find the best spaces to inhabit with your voice, and i identify with your lyric as i once lived in north carolina and miss someone who lives there.
@sheslin Mar 2022
This is gorgeous. That piano part sweeping in and out is really pretty, and those stunning vocals and lovely floating melody above are perfection. I love how the 2 parts intersect. Such a heartfelt performance - I felt every lyric. Beautifully written and performed. What a collab!
@dragondreams Mar 2022
When two of my favourite FAWMily members get together to make music, I sit back, press play, then let the gorgeous sounds wash over me.
This is beautiful. You two work so well as a team. :-)
@majormajormajormajor Mar 2022
Beautiful ballad. There ought to be more 'friendship ballads'. It certainly opens things up for it to not be a love song and you make good use of it, so intense one might have cause to wonder what might happen if an ocean didn't separate you. Please excuse the speculation, I dont know you at all, more just reacting to the lyric.
I cant tell as to any cutting- no matter how it came about, I really like how the suspensions early on open up to big, wide chords in the B sections... I particularly like that descending figure under 'you quench my thirsty soul'
@sheilerk Mar 2022
This is so beautiful! Your vocals are full and carry the emotion just right, and really soar at "Widen my view". Tim's hopeful melody was clearly just the perfect inspiration. I love the lyrics, the description of what a really good relationship consists of, what everyone wants. We all want it to be easy to be ourselves, and that's hard to find. This may be the perfect love song!

@nadine Mar 2022
I am happy that this is an *optimistic* ballad. It's so wonderful to listen to this piano and the soaring voice. I am also happy that this song can be about love and friendship. The sparse arrangement is the best choice for this song. #ListeningSkirmish
@jtsteam Mar 2022
Nice optimistic melody and lyrics with some lovely piano. I like "I get to be myself" - to me it's a sign of great friendship if you can just be yourself with someone, no need to worry about what anyone thinks, just be you. And a clearly heartfelt delivery. Great collaboration! #ListeningSkirmish
@bethdesombre Mar 2022
I'm impressed with your collaboration. And what a glorious vocal (and melody) here -- it absolutely evokes the "windswept plain." I like the repetition of "no one XXX like you," with the comparison changing in each verse (and the tease/ease rhyme carrying over across verses is cool). This is lovely! #tit4tat
@siebass Mar 2022
wow what a powerful vocal take and piano piece, this is lovely. Pulling on my heartstrings; I hope that you can be with that person again soon. This is phenomenal, great work to both of you.
@odilongreen Mar 2022
Lovely and heartfelt, both in vocals/lyrics and in the emotive piano. It's hard to believe the piano was chopped and reassembled; it all sounds great, and absolutely flows. And the soaring, beautiful vocals just touch the heart, especially with the touching lyrics of friendship and connection.
@kahlo2013 Mar 2022
Absolutely gorgeous. The heartfelt tenderness and love that comes through in the lyrics is beautiful. This song is a wonderful tribute to that kind of friendship that is so special … this song really treasures that. The piano and the melody are beautiful together. What a lovely song!
@dreamscuba Mar 2022
My gosh - this is so beautiful - angelic vocals and beautiful piano... wow... a really wonderful song. #tit4tat
@chipwithrow Mar 2022
That voice and piano combo - wow! Had me right from the beginning.
I was looking forward to hearing the acoustic bass, because I'm considering getting a bass. I love the way it's used here.
Such a wonderful, heartfelt collab!
