Feb 2022 filk comedy acoustic-one-take spoonies folk-pop
This one... we are a bit nervous about posting...
Jen and I both have chronic health conditions. Over the years we've gotten a lot of advice from well meaning individuals. We appreciate the thoughts! We don't want to attack or demean people who are trying to help - far from it!!!
But, except for rare occasions, that advice being offered is not always helpful.
This song is written as catharsis for our fellow "spoonies". And as a reminder to ourselves as well.
Acoustic live take.
Have you just tried
Wearing a hat
And have you just tried
Only eating fat
Have you just
Tried these vitamins
Have you just tried
Being thin
I heard this thing from a friend
Could it hurt to ask the doctor again
Show them the email with this one weird trick
And have you just tried
Not being sick
That’s not how it works
That’s not how it works
Undesired bad advice
Just makes you look like jerks
That’s not how any of this works
So my cousin’s brother
Saw a thing on reddit
That linked to a hidden
Wikipedia edit
By a teacher of geometry
From a book written in 1683
The text said your malady
Is caused by a lack of broccoli
And everything will be ok
If you just eat four pound a day
That’s not how it works
That’s not how it works
Please don’t try to give me pills
Unless your my actual nurse
That’s not how any of this works
I know you want to help
I’m grateful that you care
But there are so many things
Of which you’re not aware
Please don’t see a broken puzzle
Try to see the real me
The best way you can help
Is to ask me what I need
My neighbor gave me
A big old book
I haven’t finished
But you should give it a look
It said something about
Cosmic rays
And how much
An unladen swallow weighs
And I know this thing
You haven’t tried
It might not work
But no one died
And the Amazon reviews
Look pretty good
What’s the worst that could happen
I really think you should
That’s not how it works
That’s not how it works
Thank you for the thoughts
But they could leave me in a hearse
That’s not how any of this works
That’s not how it works
That’s not how it works
Please I am begging you
Don't make me write another verse
That's not how any of this works

Please post somewhere so everyone getting unsolicited medical advice can point to this instead of having to explain over and over. I find it hard not to give advice myself on other things, but I have enough sense to know everyone’s health situation is unique.

I listened very early this morning and wanted to comment, but I didn't have the mental energy to quite express my thoughts at that time. I'm still not sure I do, but I know you understand that as well!
I think the things you've labeled as potentially controversial this year really aren't. Or shouldn't be. You rightly call out things from your own perspective and how it affects you and share how you see it so others can perhaps learn and grow. I'm proud of you for doing that! And that, I would say, IS an act of bravery. I'm happy we've been able to meet and work together, and that I can enjoy the fruits of your labor even if they are, like this song, the product of challenging situations. You rock.

This is wonderful and needed saying. Everyone's an expert aren't they? So many great lines here.

Dark gallows humour. Love the reddit/edit/geometry/1683. Ooohhhhh the wisdom of ancients! rofl.... good intentions are the root of so much evil... and kudos for the live one-take. Now, after all that applause, I heard of this wonderful curative thing involving pyramids, razor blades and and diet of fermented toad with wholegrain kale, and I'm sure that if you just tried...no wait...where are you going...?

Loved it! My family has been there! Can totally relate.
