Feb 2022 doom gloom disaster foreboding folk truth
Tim sez: This foreboding lyric of @berni1954 caught my eye and other things for obvious reasons. It seems appropriate for what is probably my last FAWM 2022 Tim Fatchen song (9 hours left for me) I hope the song is totally mistaken in its prophesying and that there will be a FAWM 2023.

Berni sez: Fabulous Tim. This setting is perfect for these lyrics. I hope upon hope these lyrics will appear quaint and outdated in the next few weeks, as surely we all do, bar the armaments producers or the military.
THE BEGINNING OF THE END

CHORUS
It's the beginning of the end, old friend
It's the beginning of the end,
This whole damn thing has reached its end, old friend
This whole damn thing has reached its end,
There are powers out there that we can't comprehend
It seems it's the beginning of the end, old friend
V1
The conflict starts with an ego bruised
A feeling that you have been abused
Then comes the lies of which you've been accused
The conflict starts with an ego bruised
CHORUS
It's the beginning of the end, old friend
It's the beginning of the end,
This whole damn thing has reached its end, old friend
This whole damn thing has reached its end,
There are powers out there that we can't comprehend
It seems it's the beginning of the end, old friend
V2
The battle begins when you've run out of lies
The pretence is ended you've come to despise
Those you claim to have been your allies
The battle begins when you've run out of lies
CHORUS [instrumental]
V3
Will it ever end this never ending struggle
To be the cock of the farmyard in the end?
What will you gain if the fox has ate the chickens?
Will your ego say that's enough dividend?
CHORUS
It's the beginning of the end, old friend
It's the beginning of the end,
This whole damn thing has reached its end, old friend
This whole damn thing has reached its end,
There are powers out there that we can't comprehend
It seems it's the beginning of the end, old friend

One of the best songs I have heard in this FAWM! Great collab ... words about apocalypse - the feeling is this way. Many dead called ghosts are back. But I am sure, the light wins in the end ...
@katestantonsings Mar 2022
Poignant lyrics. Emotive vocal delivery. I love the piano and orchestration. A powerful collaboration!
@crisp1 Mar 2022
Watching what's going on with disbelief still as well as horror. This collaboration captures my feelings so well.

Very heavy without being, you know, "heavy". Ponderous mood and beautifully built atmosphere, brings to mind the orchestra that keeps playing as the Titanic is sinking, knowing full well that the end is coming but trying their best to soothe those around them. This is uplifting in that same manner.

can be viewed as a mini-scale apocalypse of a more or less personal nature or a full scale end of humanity. i see it simply as the passing of a generation that tries to revive old myths..putins soviet union, biden's democracy, trump's capitalism, as the new chldren dance into the challenges of a virtual world, their own alternative society to the mess they have inherited

Yes! Two of my favorites together! The somber melancholy piano music and delivery of the melody is perfect for the great heartfelt lyrics. The repetition of the beginning of the end old friend adds an intact and poignancy to the lyric. The addition of the strings add to the depth and emotion. This feels ominous and sad but oddly warm. I like how we don’t quite know what is ending and how the listener could consider this in so many ways - personally as we age, as a relationship, as a more global manner. Love that third verse. Well done!

Such a wonderful musical bed for Bernie’s lyrics to take hold of. I especially liked the musical swell on the second chorus, the the instrumental chorus in the middle, the classic Russian melody at the start was perfect too, as were your vocals fir this, Tim. Bernie, your lyrics certainly reflect the feelings of so many of us right now. I love the use and repeat of the word friend in the chorus. An inspired collab between two of my favorite songwriters/musicians. I wish the world situation warranted happier tunes, but this is such a good song!!

Epic! Beautiful melody, music and lyric. This is stirring up emotions in me, as it should, because it rings so true. I'm very upset about the invasion of Ukraine, but I'm glad a lot of the world is as well and people are taking to the streets to express it all over the world. This wonderful song expresses so well what many of us are feeling right now. Thank you both for creating it.
@nadine Feb 2022
The chorus is so haunting and beautiful. Like a chant in the darkness. I can imagine this as a full choir like in an requiem. I like the instrumentation.
@mikeb Feb 2022
I hope this is not a real prophesy, but the lyrics do bring current events to the forefront. The chorus' melody brings a melancholy sadness to the listener.
BTW - in your liner notes you wrote '2020' instead of '2022'.

A foreboding sound for a foreboding song. Very nicely put together by both. Timely, of course, although these lyrics could probably describe a personal as well as global conflict.

a wonderfully musical beginning of the end, if it is the beginning of the end (certainly way past the end of the beginning, that's for sure!) These days we all certainly feel like it could be the beginning of the end, too..... This is a fine lyric and the musical setting and performance are first-rate and really wonderful- love those synthy/piano tones and the minor-key feel of this is perfect for the subject.
