Cowboy Song
718- Honest Dollar ©2022 by Rob Lincoln Capo 7
Verse- Em G D C Chorus Am Em G D Em
Now in that town in Tennessee
I was to wed my Anne Marie
Till the fever took her from me
The only one I love
Headed west to Saint Louis
But on the way I chanced to meet
The undertaker on his coach seat
Said he was going my way
Got to make an honest dollar now
Got to make an honest dollar somehow
Somehow
I satby the mortician man
He asked me to lend him a hand
He needed to get some business bad
Handed me a loaded gun
He told me to get in a fight
And though I knew it was not right
The money being so very tight
I had to take it one
Chorus
The first man I killed in an old hotel
I really didn’t know him well
But I know that I’ll go straight to hell
Still I bought some fine whiskey
The whiskey tasted so damn good
I felt that maybe I just could
Leave town before I lost it all
And just slip away
Chorus
Bridge C G D….Em
Everything comes around in time
Sheriff heard through the grapevine
There was a murderer here in town
So now the ropes around my neck
I guess I won’t be getting back
To visit kin in Tennessee though I was saving up
Mortician man is by my side
But he’s not there for the rope ride
He just made another dime
Another coffin sold
Chorus

This is a great tune! The capo high on the neck reminds me of Paul Simon's "Duncan", but this is a tune that could have been sung back in the 1880's. I love the lyrics, especially "The whiskey tasted so damn good..." verse.

I'm always a sucker for a cowboy song. Nice delivery, love the twist of the mortician drumming up business.
