This one is a rarity for me- a song from my point of view, instead of some weird character I've invented. Not that I'm not a weird character (that I've invented...hmmm, that's deep thought worthy of a song sometime, better file that one away). I don't know why I tend to write in different voices, maybe it's avoidance of my own issues, perhaps it's projection, a yearning for an alternate reality, or some such other psychological feature.
This year, my pre-Fawm preparation consisted of me writing down a list of great song titles, which I was sure would turn into great songs. Once Fawm started, I promptly ignored that list, until today, when I got out the 4-track cassette recorder and decided to write my favorite title from that list. Some annotations-
Verse 1- Once, in high school, I went over to my friend Alex's house. His upstairs neighbor was there making a mix tape, for her "ex=boyfriend, who I'm kinda still into"- words that stuck in my head. Sweet, except she was terrible at making a mix tape. She was putting all kinds of soft, singer/songwriter stuff on there, with no regard for mood of pacing or flow- like I said, she was terrible at it. She got bored with it, and left us in charge of finishing it while she went back upstairs. We promptly put the thrashiest Bad Brains song we could find in between the Sarah Mclaughlin tunes or whatever it was. A dick move, to be sure, but , we were 16 or so at the time and it seemed funny. I've always wondered what happened when the boy played that tape.
Verse 2- once, my band Aphrodesia was on tour and the party was in full swing. We were playing Lake Tahoe. At some point during the show, I looked over at Jason, our drummer, and we both had downed so many beers we both needed to pee, badly. I felt like I was going to explode but didn't know what to do, and then our 'mellow' song in the set came up, where our singer paused and played a tune on mbira while the band didn't come in until the second verse. Jason and I jumped offstage, streaked through the crowd, leaped down a flight of stairs, ran for the bathroom at top speed, like some vaudeville act, somehow making it back on stage. just before we needed to play a note.
Verse 3- the morning after I met my wife for the first time, we walked to a tiny Mexican place in Bushwick near my house and got huevos rancheros.
Do you remember the girl
she came from upstairs while we played she sat there
so in love with him still
she picked all the songs to win back his heart and then left
us alone with the deck
so we pushed Dr. Know, H.R. and the rest in between
her best did she know?
whenever she played the tape that we made
Do you ever Wonder, because I always wonder
how it turned out, were we wrong were we right
Do you ever wonder, yeah I always wonder
but sometimes I look back with more of a smile, you know
The music poured forth
from us on all of the glowing faces and we
looked at each other, we both had to pee so suddenly
a break in the sound, was all that we needed to rush
from the stage and straight back, a full flight down
we tore down the hall as the mbira sang
And then there's the sun
that poured through the window on your naked back
and we knew
so we walked a block more
for eggs and tortillas so good to meet us

Enjoyed reading the description as I was listening and hearing the lyrics interject with plot points. Infectious alt-rock guitar song!

I glad you circled back and found the inspiration. I like the feel of that guitar, and let’s just get 3 cheers for those double tracked vocals - woo woo woo!

Sometimes it’s good to get all self-referential. If you’re not going to write about your life, who else is gonna do it??
And you’ve done it so well; that guitar drags you in, the bass is subtle but perfect in where it comes in and leaves, and what it does when it’s there, and the (hugely relatable) lyrics and singing are awesome. Really enjoyable listen!
