Feb 2022 dystopian wall-of-sound
I had a lot of this worked out, then I noticed the lyrics were awful. These are new lyrics about the dystopian future in which we already live. In two weeks I'll probably realize that they're bad too, but FAWM will be done by then. :)
Priority gets away from me
In this golden age we never see a lack of conversations
Connections, collections, intentions, inventions
Shift out of time, take a moment and I’ll bring it back to
what necessity consists, the points of most importance on the list
Sweep away the chaff, silly motives good for a laugh
Dreams and rhymes that can’t get us to the gate by half
Half a world away, troubles live an endless day in the
Harsh light of interpretation, walk the mile of another nation
Though I know that it’s a shame, in the end we’re all the same
those windows to the soul reflect diverse realities until they close
On an endless night where there’s no dogma left to fight
We’ll leave what’s left and hope everythings all right
so sort and file, make some calls, put on a smile
or climb the walls, any choice may make the difference in a life with so many
indifferent indecisions. buried in communication, no way to tell the data from the information, try to pick out what’s going to matter, or just go on vacation
But I cannot say that I’ll just walk away still
priority gets away from me
All the bills and paperwork, shred them down now save a tree
Fifteen hundred unread messages get pushed to bulk delete
Stop the ringing, stop the buzzing, kill the apps now, smash the phone
Spread around some gasoline and burn down everything you own
And you’re left standing in the wreck, free from email, voice, and text
You’ll still know there’s something you have to do next

This is a lamentation, but it's performed through the filter of bands like Talking Heads (the BVs in the middle section strongly remind me of David Byrne!)
That last line is a heck of a punchline. And it'd probably turn out that way IRL—let's hope we never find out.

I think the lyrics work, especially the first half, when it's a bit more vague. I'm a sucker for this theme, though. I like the "voice" effects in that middle part.
