Feb 2022 blues-rewrite cbg ukulele dulcimer collab
Nancy says:
Mike sent me a uke-and-drums track this afternoon, and I got out several of my stringed instruments while I thought about a lyrical rhythm. I had in the back of my mind to do the blues-rewrite challenge with "Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do" so that's where I went.
Mike says:
Its always a wonderful thing to see what Nancy will do with something I send her- this really hits a home run for me, love the whole 'off the grid, supply chain be damned' thing here, and that groovily frenetic phrasing is perfect for that overheated uke thing I did. Ha, love it!
Mike - ukulele, programmed drums
Nancy - uke bass, cigar box guitar, dulcimer, lyrics, vocal
If I take a notion to get offa the grid
If I slow my motion and keep more of me hid
If I'm pretty happy here alone in my room
And if I'm finding I need less to consume
No truck
Tough luck
If I'm not spending it's nobody's business
I'm not fooling
Stop screwing with me
What I'm eschewing ain't nobody's business
If I decide that I'm already complete
If I decide that I don't need to compete
Who's got a problem with me living so sweet
Guess who?
It's you
My fulfillment ain't nobody's business
My friends
Ain't means to your ends
Who I'm talking to ain't nobody's business
Anybody who's been living this long
Has someone tell them that they're doing it wrong
I'm just a person who is making a song
I'm nuts
So what
What I'm singing here is nobody's business
If you want to listen it's nobody's business

I love the ukulele struming and the bass, They bring on so much joy and energy. But I've got a soft spot for the cigar box guitar. i heard the song several time because it's hidden all the way behind. Love the sound of it.

love the shape and catchiness of that hook. i like the attitude in the lyrics and performance. the fast paced music contrasts with the cool attitude. i reckon this would settle in to an even more nuanced shape with performance and familiarity, (which i obvs don't expect at FAWM, just saying i see a lot of potential for that being really effective for this song) that hook has been earworming me since it stopped playing. really nice collab, very enjoyable listen

I like the fast-paced rhymes.
You took the rewrite in a new direction,

I like that the pace is frenzied and the second line is about slowing down…
I like the CBG slides here and there, that adds a lot. Nice chromatic bass line, adds a central trunk to this tree.
I like the second verse. What if I’m complete? Who are you to say otherwise? I’m nuts / so what is a perfect line in this high-speed chase.

That's right - ain't nobody's business if I do. Great collab, folks. I love tell-it-like-it-is tunes...and this one has hip fun and attitude.

Surfs up! This is so fun. I love your singing here Nancy! A winner overall!
@sarahk Feb 2022
Winner winner winner! Loved the layers of meaning in the line "if I'm not spending it's nobody's business."

Great!! I love the pace of the song. The message is great too. Personally, I’d of been way out of breath trying to sing that!!
@n24 Feb 2022
I love the fast-paced vocal delivery, gives it a nice galloping pace. The chord progression on the uke is great, some really nice augmenting notes hopping around with each chord. Excellent lyrics as well, that theme of self-acceptance always sits well for me. Great collab :)

Really cool Uke/dulcimer combo but I think the bass deserves a shout out too. This is musically and lyrically, an I-don't-give-a-damn all around good time. "I'm nuts, so what" says it all. And I think that might just be the key to happiness :-) Way to go you two!
@kahlo2013 Feb 2022
Such a great hook, wonderful attitude, fantastic match of music and lyrics, and great energy! I love it!

This is great. Love that sound, it reminds me of something by MCCartney, only more manic. I totally identify with the theme. Dropping off the grid is hard. Great collaboration, guys!
