Standup: I had a couple of lines about Daisy Malibu, a name I made up. She sounded like a Barbie sidekick to me. Sent that Loveonamixtape, and she came back with this song. Standup plays bass, programs the drums, plays electric guitars, and did the mix/production.
loveonmixtape: Standup sent me the first few lines about Daisy Malibu, and it instantly got me thinking about classic California archetypes, like the LA groupie party girl, the surfer bum. Which then got me thinking about whether many of these archetypes can really afford to live in California anymore. It also conjured up a sunny, easy 70s California rock vibe, ala the Eagles, Jackson Brown, Fleetwood Mac, Warren Zevon, and I thought it would be fun to do a proper back and forth style duet. So I finished the lyric, banged out a melody and then @standup finished the song with the arranging and production, to which I added my vocals and some acoustic guitar. Always enjoy collabing with @standup, so really glad we were able to pull this one out right before the end!

Dear daisy Malibu
Thanks for nothing
You'll never leave the barbie rave
Your plastic train went off the rails
when you wake up in that dream house all alone
I hope it finally dawn's on you
You're on your own
(Ashley)
Hey Hollywood Harry
Thanks for nothing
You can go and swim yourself
All the way across the Pacific for all I care
And I hope you find that perfect wave, one day
I really do
But when you get back to the beach
Babe, I won't be there
(Together)
Ooooh you used to be my cover
Now you're trying to tell me that the party's over
(Eric)
Ooh once it seemed we had it made
(Ashley
Now we're priced out of the Palisades
(Together)
And if California's done with me
Baby then I'm done with you
Gonna leave your love behind
Before the rent comes due
(Ashley)
Hey Hollywood Harry
(Eric)
Daisy Malibu
(Ashley)
When you see the sunrise over Sunset
Even you gotta admit, it's time to come home
(Eric)
Sometimes I fantasize about
Getting on the 405 and never looking back
(Ashley)
But even if you made out of the gridlock alive
Where would you go?
(Eric)
Hell if I know!
(Together)
Ooooh once you were my cover
Now you're trying to tell me that the party's over
(Ashley)
Once it seemed we had it made
(Eric)
Now we're priced out of the Palisades
(Together)
Well, if California's done with me
I'm holding on to you
Maybe we'll get that big break, babe,
Before the rent comes due

Great interplay of voices in this doubly one sided conversation.

Nice melody and performance. I like the back and forth duet. Yeah, lots of inflation these days. It's getting really bad. I worry about lower income families. Hard times. Good song!

Nice duet and a good story. I like the pictures you're painting here and the 70s rock vibe it has.

That plastic train going off track is one of the coolest images I heard this FAWM. Good idea to do a duet and these personas are cool. You sound well together.

could lose myself in this all day. It was the California sound that really stuck for me in my misbegotten youth and part of me secretly feels that this is how electric guitars should really sound, despite the efforts of everybody and everyone especially Mike Oldfield. There's a huge amount of melancholy living behind the music and the lyrics. And the story is really intelligent. And real. And hopeful/sad because--the big break never comes, we know--and California did with all of us, long long long ago. [EDIT; resisted the temptation to listen again. Downloaded instead to cherish and weep over later]

This is great. Such a clever story, so many great lines. I liked 'Your plastic train went off the rails' in particular. Great duet work.

I loved the duet, and the whole Malibue Barbie and Ken motif. You really hit the genre. I could hear the years turning back. But, the lyrics kept it in the present, and it still wound up without the downer of a breakup. That would have been tragic. A great collaboration, and it's fun hearing how it came to be.

This is lovely! I really like these collabs that go back and forth and have duets. Love so many lines, but "When you see the sunrise over Sunset" is my favorite. And you captured the vibe perfectly in this song. What a great collab!

This is great guys! Love the alternating verses. Glad you mentioned Fleetwood Mac as I can hear that influence all over this track, there’s a really feel of Lindsey and Stevie singing to each other and then together.
That “once you were my cover” line is really fantastically delivered. Also really enjoyed “Well, if California's done with me I'm holding on to you”. That’s a standout line, brilliant writing. And the two guitars go so well together! Love it, bravo

You both have lovely voices! Cant go wrong with a nice laid back classic rock track. nice duet <3

Definitely has a relaxed, California, Eagles sound. The warm, bouncing guitars and vocals hit the right spot. The lyrics feel like an escape from a plastic life into a more real one.

Great duet! Love the personas and the story. And the performances. Favorite lyric: "your plastic train went off the rails" - because I can see that happening in the toy store and in L.A., haha.

Love the lackadaisical delivery. Something really west coast FM about this. Voices are fantastic, really well done. Love it.
