Song Skirmish
Prompt Window
Note: I was a bit of a punk in this song - I don't know how to whistle.. So I thought I'd give myself a solo at the end.. apologies in advance
Widow Window
lived on Willow
with a wildish wombat
Neighbour Nelly
nestled nicely
next door
Bachelor Brian
lived beside 'em
bickering with birds
But the bird
bickered
more
Caw! Caw! Caw!
Tweet! Tweet! Tweet!
You're not the boss
Of this street
said the murder of Crows
the gaggle of Geese
and the dive-bombing
Chickadees
and the widow
watched the world
on her street
while neighbour Nelly
napped
due to narcolepsy
and Brian bit the bullet
and bought bird seed
and the wombat whistled
waywardly...

There's silly that's just childish, and there's silly that's clever and poetic, with a deft sense of language. This is the smart kind, and it's hard to walk that line and get it right. You have a true poetic sensibility (says I). And the alternately serious and slightly manic delivery is just right.

I'm a sucker for some alliteration, and love the mid-song bird commentary in the accompaniment. Also, Caw! Caw! Caw!/Tweet! Tweet! Tweet/You're not the boss/Of this street is *deeply* satisfying. I had to listen a second time to appreciate how much feeling you wring out of this little vignette of briefly-sketched characters.

"Tweet! Tweet! Tweet!
Caw! Caw! Caw!
Tame your cat
Withhold her paw"
Okay, today I'll sway you
rude raptors strewn food.
For more, don't implore me,
Chickadees.
(Window and Nelly sound like lovely people who shouldn't have to put up with a loud Brian's tish. Narcolepsy as a blessing?)

You have been busy! Everything about this is exquisite. I love the book ends, the lyrics, the delivery, the little tweeties at the end. My favourite lines are the caw caw...boss of this street, and the dive bombing chickadees. Love the juxtaposition of the tiny birds and vicious intentions.
@ayehahmur Feb 2022
Ah this is so full of good natured humour. Love the alliteration that edges things into a lovely fluffy surrealism. The EP sound is perfect for it and, let me tell you, I think that's exactly how a wombat would whistle.

Wonderful skirmish song. The piano plays along sweetly and adds a little mischievous humor coming into the last verses . Fun vocals and whistling - worked great!
@chipwithrow Feb 2022
A charmingly off-kilter neighborhood scene. Super lyrics, and I love your warm voice. You whistle a whole lot better than I do!
@sheslin Feb 2022
Oh this delightful! So creative with a little whimsy thrown in. The synth is light and pretty and really compliments your lovely vocals. Extra credit for the whistling effort. Your song was so much fun to listen to. Thanks!
@jwhanberry Feb 2022
Loved your alliteration. It gave some extra interest to your picture. Still doesn't stop the dive-bombing chickadees. I've got some in my flock too.
@hoppiern Feb 2022
Really fun take on the prompt - the alliteration, the imagery of the birds, the wombat whistling - very entertaining to listen to! Well done!!
@whispermouse Feb 2022
LOVE the lyrics! Great intro to the whistle solo, too. Nice skirmish!
@sunfire Feb 2022
I love the approach to the skirmish. Fun song! I like it.
@kahlo2013 Feb 2022
Ohhh… this flows so beautifully and I love the word play. Your delivery is really spectacular. I love how your keys personify the birds! Fantastic creative and clever take on the lyric. The poignancy touches my heart. I am listening as I watch the nuthatches, mourning doves, cardinals, red finches, and house sparrows enjoy the birdseed I have on the deck. They feed after the squirrels in the morning, and the ducks, rabbits, and opossum and raccoons will follow them in that order.
@corinnecurcio Feb 2022
As an avid birder - I adore this! Neighbor Nelly made me chuckle! This song is so much fun!
@berni1954 Feb 2022
I love all the alliteration and the fun images, the collective nouns, oh.. WT heck .. I love the whole thing!
@nancycunning Feb 2022
Oh, this brings back all the silly songs I'd sing to my kids a few minutes (I mean years) ago. I love that the characters come back in a slowed down reprise. What a lovely way to wind down and put the monkey mind to sleep....Thank you.
@misterdemp Feb 2022
This sweet story telling nap time presentation with such dark lyrics is really a good concept!
@keithcuts Feb 2022
this is soooo creative! dig the alliteration and vocab!
this is an amazing take on the prompt!
it sounds super!
@unknownbecky Feb 2022
Oh my gosh, this song is so fun! I'm a sucker for any song with animals it and both the animals and the people are so delightful here. I love when Brian bites the bullet and buys bird seed.
@richardmasters Feb 2022
This is ACE!!!!!! It's a fantastic story - love all the characters and the plot - so brilliantly concise, I'm in awe of this. The chord changes are just the biz and your delivery is absolutely spot on - you have so much intention in the way that you sing this. Did I say that this is absolutely top-notch?
@mikeskliar Feb 2022
ha, this is charming and great fun! love the whole thing! great wordplay and music-play as well! nice singing and wurl playing too! (and the whistling is great!)
@andrea Feb 2022
This is a crazy little street. I love this. It is so creative, silly and fun. I really like the way you sang the lyrics. Your whistle sounds like birds! Cool skirmish :)
