Feb 2022 colorstrology instrumental
I took a bite at the #Colorstrology Challenge (https://fawm.org/forums/topic/12456/), and I got Dusty Orchid (https://www.pantone.com/connect/17-1610-TPX) which is a sort of deep lavender color. The characteristics are supposedly: diligent, attractive and responsible.
I decided that I wanted to do an English Country Dance number inspired by the color, and I was going to do the Every Ukulele and Kitchen Sink challenges with this, and try to use every instrument in it. I wrote it in G pentatonic, so it should be easy to add all my various instruments to it.
And then life and family issues showed up and I completely crashed. I've been hitting FAWM hard this month with listening and commenting, and also trying different things with my songs. So I decided that I'm just going to post what I have right now, and maybe if I have some energy in early March I can rerecord it. Right now it's just a MIDI oboe and upright bass. Just imagine what it would be if I put a bunch of ukuleles, a concertina, hammered dulcimer, autoharp, strumstick, mandolin, whistles, flutes, recorders, and various percussion instruments.
Instrumental - no lyrics.

Yes! This really does have an English Folk feel (as opposed to a Celtic feel).

Ah, that oboe! Quite pastoral. And I've long been an admirer of those who pluck the upright bass.
Giving a second listen now!

Oh how pretty and homegrown this feels. A lovely Celtic melody. Very enjoyable listen.

This is such a pretty melody. It is good to still be picking off songs to listen to while I breakfast and read mail. You certainly seemed to have an excellent FAWM, keep up the good music, and hopes for 50/90.

This didn't need the kitchen sink, though doubtless all the other instruments would be fun. I can also imagine it with someone singing a traditional tune in harmony to this tune. Nice.

The melody has the proper English folk song feel, no issues with imaging it fully fleshed out, but it also would stand alone with Northumbrian pipes, or recorder, or tin whistle, or fiddle.

I can truthfully relate to life and family issues showing up when you're in the process of being creative. However, this striped down version of what you may have intended works well and I can imagine all that you've described in the notes. Should you ever come back to it, let me know.
@robynmackenzie Mar 2022
I definitely want to hear the kitchen sink version, but this is lovely in its own right. I can picture the dancers as they move delicately around to this little tune.
@nadine Mar 2022
I never thought about using a pentatonic scale as basis. I end up adding some pentsronic soli on top of a major minor whatever scale. But the pentatonic sound so soothing and ballady. Sometimes simplicity works.

This is a great start, Ken - beautiful melody and clean bass line. I can't wait to hear the other tracks!
@wobbiewobbit Mar 2022
nice tune, i hope to hear the kitchen sink version next time :)
@analogj Feb 2022
Very simple and lovely. Sometimes simple is best.
@elesimo Feb 2022
This is lovely... my friend commissioned me to write a song for him that sounds medieval, and I feel I should just refer him to you! :) I really like the atmosphere in this one!

Great traditional folk dance tune. Great melody. Songs good with the midi instruments and I'm sure will translate well to an ensemble of the kitchen sink of instruments.
@liz561 Feb 2022
The oboe sound is really lovely! A gentle and lilting tune. Great job with the midi keyboard. If you need more instruments, count me in for uke player and I have soprano and alto recorders. PLUS I learned five guitar chords over FAWM-so just call me (LOL).
@coolparadiso Feb 2022
Its very nice as is but yeah i can imagine the full production, you ever decide to do more on this put me down as a helper! Andddd mate you have done more than enough this Fawm! You've had a great one! And thx again for sharing in two songs with me!
@kristi Feb 2022
I meant to do more challenges too this FAWM...anyway, what you have sounds good! I like the two instruments as they tell a story and we can imagine another time and place. I like being transported like that. Good work!
