Feb 2022 slow sedate synthpop faithless-collab
@brisk - this is a bit of a faithless collaboration. (With @davidtaro 's blessing,) I've cut the heart out of his words to try to bring the song length down. I've reproduced them all below because I thought they were really nice, but I haven't used them all. Sorry!
I like the chorus melody I think, and the chords that go with it. But mainly this is a typical last minute brisk bodge job I'm afraid. I can feel the Ides of March breathing down my neck, so sorry that I haven't given it more time. The bridge is comically underdeveloped, and a lot of vocal one-take magic has gone on throughout. I hope it gives the jist of something though.
Please Mr Taro, add any comments here as you wish...
David edit: Each year I like to give @brisk some really appallingly difficult words to set to music. And once again, he's delivered something beyond my expectations. Just for context, my wife comes from a family of geologists. I suspect they would not approve of the accuracy or legitimacy of some of the references. But they are not on FAWM, so sod them.
[CH]
I dig, I dig
Into the core of you
I dig, I dig
Until I make it through
[V1]
Through surface sand
And light loam
I break my shovel
On the dark stone
You remain a mystery
Maybe just a fantasy
[V2]
Through lias limestone
A sickle-shaped scar
Through slate and killas
And blue marl
I think I begin to see
What you could really be
[CH]
[V3]
Through clay and brickearth
Iron red and grey
I bring up memories
Of burnished, halcyon days
Just a reflection in the night
Nothing but a fake light
[V4]
Through shale and granite
The coal measures
Darkening fast
No sunken treasures
And I start to understand
This was always your plan
[CH]
[BR]
Down on hands and knees
Clawing at the bare earth
Each strata could yet reveal
What you're really worth
Fingers are bloody
Eyes stung with sweat
And yet all I have to show
Is darkness, pain and cold regret
[CH]
[CODA]
This is you
This is you
This is really you

Nice Collab! Love the vibe, arrangement and delivery. Reminds of an updated Sparklehorse sound! I like that the tone of the vocal in the verses sounds slightly thinner and then fuller in the chorus which kicks them up a subtle notch. I like the extended metaphor throughout the lyrics with all of the geological references. Dig it! ;)

These lyrics are full of unusual words and topic. But I think this makes it special. Dream pop?

Those pulsing synth chords are so mellow, this song is totally charming. I love the geology references David and I certainly don’t have the education to question them! I’m always really impressed by the variety in your song writing, you’re bold with your themes but it always pays off. You’re right about that chorus, it’s a lovely melody, really beautiful production on this, I think it suits the minimalism of the production personally. There’s some really interesting little touches in the soundscape which are really taking me on a dream like journey with this track. I dig it!

You two…boy…after being treated to so many wonderful songs during 50/90 it’s about time for this reunion! I dig…I dig…the chorus, the concept, the collaboration, the originality, the melody, the lyrics…but mostly I dig both of you and all your awesomeness!!!

You two always find good ways to make music. Lovely gentle paced song. The music has a calming beat. A really enjoyable listen

That chorus is to die for - lovely melody. The backing is so subtle, yet it’s gorgeous - I love those whispery bits! Very nice lyrics and you’ve definitely done them justice.
I’ve stared at picture on the Bandcamp page for about 10 minutes, and I can’t work out what it is. Is there a face with a beak?

I am digging that chorus. What lovely chords (particularly the second one in the progression), you're really spoiling us! I like that glitchy bass synth too. The verse ain't half bad either, but yes that chorus is the big thing here I feel. I also think cutting those verses and bridge lines was 100% the correct call, it would really have dragged. Great work, sir, I am a very happy collaborator :)

i had to stop everything and throw on headphones...
so happy i did...
i also, had to google the title.. :) it's the perfect name for this song. and what a song. love the lyrics on this.
i'm swooning over that chorus... seriously swooning
such an intimate and vulnerable sounding vocal. i love it.
i understand the time crunch nearing the end of the season - i am really happy i came across this collab. it's a beaut!

Dreamy indie pop. As an earth science geek, I thoroughly enjoyed these lyrics! You two are incredibly creative. This was lovely and light. My favorite part is the chip tune-inspired synths. Cool collab!

Well I enjoyed it very much!
