I did this today, walking around with my youngest kid and having him test different things to see if they were magnetic — some metals aren’t, some wood veneers have metal behind them, etc. He was thrilled to share the findings in real-time with me.
Later this night, with Ukraine heavy on my mind, I was thinking about how fun and enriching this first-hand knowledge was, and how calamitous and traumatic the first-hand knowledge of current events is for so many others in the world right now. So I started writing, and what should have been a light friendly song became sort of a bummer. I tried to keep it upbeat in the instrumentation though, and really intended on uploading a demo for this, but it’s going to have to wait, hopefully tomorrow.
Let’s take a magnet
walk around the house and
see what makes it stick
Before you know it
the connections in your brain
soon start to click
You might be only 3 but
frankly it’s amazing at the speed
your pattern recognition
makes predictions you correctly heed
(break)
“Which one is different”
is a game we’ve never
bothered with before
You distinctly know the markings
on each car and dinosaur
Although it drives me mad when
you insist that your pajamas match
I am so proud to be your dad
it makes my breath begin to catch
You’re growing up so fast and
you’re so proud to
tell me what what you learn
In your piping voice that
talks my ear off
everywhere I turn
(break)
But just for now I’d rather
lift you in my arms and squeeze you tight
There are some things that I’d
prefer to teach you on some other night
So let’s explore the world around us
while we stay within our home
cause what’s surrounding us
is more than any 3-year-old should know

It goes dark, and it rings true, and no 3-yo should be subject to more than a parent's love. Ping when demo'd pls.
