What's that expression.... 'revenge is a dish best served cold'. So this is a somewhat fictionalized thing based on a few different situations I've observed. May have come out a little more dark and bitter then I wanted, but it is what it is. Did a very quick recording on the iPhone with an attempt at a harmonica overdub in the iPhone's garageband, tho it messed up the sound a bit- I guess this sounds ok enough for a demo tho, just to see if I want to explore this song a little more.
Curious if this resonates for people, or .. not so much.
Some if raised by wolves
become another wolf in the pack
Others grow up in opposition
Make up for what their ancestors lacked
Most time the apple does not grow far from the tree
I should have expected you would be what you’d be
your family is difficult, judgmental and pretentious
and sadly, you complete the end of that sentence
you think you’ve achieved some amount of independence
you’re a chip off the old block of hate
not seeing you, feels great
There was a time I had some hope
You wouldn’t fall for the traps
But all of their bile flowed so freely
There was no way to turn off the tap
Its another case of like father like son
The party’s over, the bad guys won
your family ….
Bridge
Wish things were different, but I can see they are not
It’s the old cliché, the standard plot
your family is difficult, judgmental and pretentious
and sadly, you complete the end of that sentence
you think you’ve achieved some amount of independence
you’re a chip off the old block of hate
not seeing you, feels great

I'm a sucker for a harb in a song and I love those little harb stabs. Great job Mike , as usual!

That. Chorus. OUCH!!! If you'll excuse me, I need to send this to a lot of people. Like, A LOT a lot. Really love the harmonica in this. Adds a very rebellious edge.

Positively 103rd Street! Quite the kiss-off with some great lines (“a chip off the old block of hate”) — this feels very personal on the one hand, but on the other hand, reflective of what so many people have gone through with family and friends in this divided (in the sense of sane vs hateful) time.
Plus, Dylanesque harmonica, and I mean that in a good way.

I could listen to this type of thing all day! Lovely groove you've got going here.

Ah, I see you've met my ex-wife.
Really great lyrics and excellent vocal delivery.
Catchy chorus for sure.
Love that harmonica.
Super great write here; yeah, a keeper for sure.

The harmonica works really well here, and the sentiment is definitely one I can understand. I love the way the chorus flows. I’d definitely say this is one to keep developing.

Harmonica is always a treat. I really like the changes in the prechorus that lift it into the third section. Some clever and funny lyrics here: "you complete that sentence" is a brilliant rhyme and completion of the thought; "chip off the old block of hate", "no way to turn off the tap". And the title line / refrain is what drew me in first. And yes, we all have someone whom it feels great not to see!

I was drawn in by the title as it resonates with me - haven't spoken to me brother in years for some of the reasons you outline here! I thought you captured that sentiment very well, I enjoyed listening to this, as well as the boss harmonica playing.

Its a huge smack line- not seeing you feels great. Its a complex issue, i believe like most things there is some balance. I think there is plenty of free will some abused abuse some are anti, some bullied bully some fight bullies. I think lawyers use it all as defence, its noty their fault it was their upbringing! Well that went down a rabbit hole fast . Meanwhile back at the music! . It think its a pretty good demo harmonica sounds good. Nice one Mike

Good one! Though our recent experience is that the particular chip we were afflicted with put the whole black in the shade. "Not seeing you, feels great" is such a cruel but true line, I can feel the joy wash through me. Ho hum, another hour in purgatory learning forgiveness for me, I guess but what the hey...

Well the title is great, so that's half the way to being a great song right there. I think this is a good start, sometimes the verses get a little wordy for me, I could hear it being thinned out a bit, but maybe that's just me. I think the guitar and harmonica work well too
