The song began with the 'sleep standing up' line and grew from that seed. We decided that it could be associated with sleepwalking through life, zoning out in situations that didn't excite.
From there we developed it into a kind of meditation, that the choice was to look inwards and find peace. Using sleep stories to guide to a restful state. Using the inspiration of those adverts that Headspace have on YouTube ads, that strange calm voice they use to induce a calming atmosphere.
The musical change up represents a waking moment, a drive to assert oneself and become more engaged with surroundings. It was a first take free-expression rock out, complete with expressive vocal inflections.
The final line being unresolved is meant to mirror the dreams which end just before a vital piece of information is revealed. Leaving you to wake up with a 'nearly' feeling with which to start the day.
But essentially the end result is an attempt to become becalmed and at ease with your situation.
We also recorded birds live from the garden, the traffic noise almost defeated us but they are there to add a bit of nature.
Certain states exist to clear your mind
Relax you can unwind
Losing feeling as it drifts into your bones
You don’t have to go alone
Sleep standing up
I’m not so tough
Heard the story as it wandered through the room
Dancing in the gloom
Destination that I think I understand
Close my eyes we’re coming in to land
Sleep standing up
I’m not so tough
Searching for a space to put your doubts to bed
‘Cause You’re drifting off, you’re back on course
The light is left behind
You’re finding you’re fighting/chasing
Shadows in your mind
You’re waiting (on) , you’re fading (out)
Sleep standing up
I’m not so tough
Searching for a space to put your doubts to bed
‘Cause You’re drifting off, you’re back on course
The light is left behind
You’re finding you’re facing
Shadows now defined
(cause) You’re waiting on , you’re fading out
You’re only half asleep
The One lie you must know is…

This track starts out so lush with that haunting double tracked vocal and then as it builds the resulting transformation signalled by those guitars is so satisfying! The lyric is dreamy and opaque and the hook is so intriguing. Love it guys!

As relaxing as the first part of the song is, I really like it when power pop part kicks in and brings in an energy that counters the intentional calmness of the lyrics. If I were to do this, I would add a drop before the additional instruments kick in, but outside of that, it‘s nicely, fully realized. Great job!

That orchestration fits so well with the dreamy theme and then the classic rock vibe takes over and we're away! Great arrangement. I especially the change up in the melody line on "searching for a space..."

I love the melody of this; the section before the guitar kicks in is utterly superb. The whole thing is so well realised - really sophisticated song-writing. That vocal is just so up my street, I possibly live next door.

Really impressive production here guys! Feels really huge and epic by the end. I loved that intro too, with the beautiful string arrangement (not enough songs use those pizzicato type strings). And the way it segues into the guitar bit is really nicely done, totally gets across the waking up moment.

Very magical! Starts so lovely, soaringly and beautifully melodic, and then BAM, just punches you in the face. A total turnaround, that works so well with the concept of the song. And then the melding and blending of the two halves for the final movement -- like I said at the start, just magical!
