Nancy says: Always a pleasure to write with Aaron! I think this is the most thoroughly co-written song we've done yet, with each of us contributing to the overall concept, composition, lyrics and edit. The simple demo is mine - maybe some time we can sing and play this together. The drum loop is courtesy of EigoBrain from the Looperman site.
We were walking that old familiar path
And you broke into a song
In the middle of a sentence
A song that made no sense
You kept me off-kilter
With the timing of a comic
I was waiting for the punchline
As I heard your voice trail off
And then I woke up
Into the stillness of the morning
Except the rattle of the heater
And the greyness of the sky
And then I woke up
I still have the memories
But memories never capture
Your power to surprise
I was stumbling through my trance dance
In the middle of the day
In the middle of my life
As sunlight slipped away
Making mountains out of molehills
Brawling monsters in my mind
Fighting shadows in my bedroom
Until I stepped outside
And then I woke up
I could hear the bell ringing
I could hear the angel singing
To open up my eyes
And then I woke up
As if shaken from my slumber
That clap of thunder always has
The power to surprise
When the rain had finally cleared
I took a walk down that old path
I kind of had to laugh
It looked exactly like my dream
And I knew that you were missing
But I couldn’t keep from singing
I was pulled out of my thinking
By a rustling of wings
And then I woke up
That bird sure picked its moment
To turn my heart wide open
As I watched it rise
And then I woke up
Full of sentences and thunder
Birds and songs and wonder
And I stepped a little lighter
In a world with these reminders
Of the power to surprise

I find this one very mooving. Mabe it moved me trough the path that overcome grief ?
"And then I woke up" at the beining of every chorus made me wonder how many times we need to wake up after a mourning nightmare. But it's most likely my own situation at play here.
Lots of powerfull images. Metaphorical imagination and vivid dayly life experience both. It helps relating with the dream-like situation and with the grieving character.

I like the dreaminess of the lyric punctuated by "and then I woke up." That'll stick in my head for a while. #listeningskirmish

Beautifully well done.
The interlace of dream and not-dream is charming, If I got this right, in verse three you walk down the actual path that was in your dream but that turns out to be a dream too. Maybe I'm wrong, but if I am, don't wake me.
Lovely delivery both lyrically and musically.

Wow, people. I am touched deeply. The lyrics, Nancy’s arrangement and I’ve not heard such a…a…well shoot - I don’t have the words to convey. This is keeper material and I hope you get to perform it live one day.

This is a total keeper for sure- one of the best things by either/both of you, perhaps!. The lyrics are really evocative, every single line, with a (dare I say it this week) Russian-nesting-doll dream within dream, each inside the other's reality well, you get the idea...... Great work, and the music fits this well. Great job!

I love the journey these lyrics take the listener on, and the way the final chorus pulls it all together in such a positive way. Nice singable melody, especially in the chorus, You sound great on this, Nancy! Well done, both of you!!

This is a lovely piece of work. The sweetness in the delivery of the vocals is really special. A great flow and feeling all the way through.

This is a great song and your delivery, Nancy, is wonderful! The lyrics are wonderfully poetic, nostalgic, and uplifting in how transforming one perspective changes everything. I love the chorus! Wonderful collaboration!

Lovely, those basic piano chords with that rhythm section suitably in the background marking time and that soulful vocal painting this landscape and an inner portrait.
