Feb 2022 angry-disco punk-funk fire
@vomvorton - owl is usually first on my FAWM collabs dance-card but this year I let a bunch of other people jump the queue! When we did get around to it, I'd just watched the film "Born in Flames", which is like... a radical feminist near-future faux-documentary with an incredible soundtrack from 1983? It's hard to describe. But it had a song with this kinda funky 80s drum machine vibe on the soundtrack (in one of the best scenes!) and it made me want to have a go. I'm really happy that the inspiration also ended up as the title and this fills me with the same feeling of righteous energy that the movie did! Hell yeah! Vowl Sounds forever!
@owl: It was super fun collaborating on something that's a bit of a different sound from our usual collabs! I love the energy and groove of this one! As I was telling Vom, I don't think my voice is particularly credible for this style of music, so it feels a little embarrassing, but I think with the help of his production stylings we pulled it off! VOWL SOUNDS FOREVER!
Look out!
I don't wanna hurt nobody
I'm not
The kind of girl to hurt somebody
But you've
Lit the rag and thrown the bottle
I swear to God I'll explode
Crack the egg
Throw me the shells to put back together
You say
You've got water and then stoke the fire
With kerosene
Laughing as it rages higher
But I was born
I was born in flames
Born in flames
Born in flames
Born in flames
You get the door
And then slam it shut on someone's hand
You take joy
In breaking everything you can
You're like
The needle in the camel's eye
You don't even try to hide it
You prick
Always trying to pinch and poke
You love
Looking for someone to provoke
You'd set the world on fire just to watch it burn
But I was born
I was born in flames
Born in flames
Born in flames
Born in flames
I'm not afraid of you
And your petty little games
I was born in the fire
I'm a child of the flames
But I was born
I was born in flames
Born in flames
Born in flames
Born in flames

Wow.... Jumping out with authority, Owl, you rocked that vocal, this could easily jump onto a Eurythmics album or something else 80's. Powerhouse lyrics (as always), amazing vocal, superb music and vibe! What a great song. Branching out, but claiming another style with authority. :)
@kiffa Mar 2022
And a murderers' row of vomvorton collabs continues. @owl, you sound great on this, and you have absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about. I really like the subversion of the old "camel through the eye of a needle" adage... very creative. This one's gonna be stuck in my head for a while.
@leepat Mar 2022
power to the bass! great energy and contrast between the short and long lines (and notes). fun percussions and great harmonies!
hot stuff!
@majormajormajormajor Mar 2022
Cool tune! You really kind of bury the hook on this one. It flows really well still, but the way the verse flows into the chorus makes them seem all of a piece- then the repetitions later on really set the hook and there's a synth counter melody that serves to further sink it. It's just as strong, but the dynamic arc becomes more linear- really interesting choice and something I will most definitely try in my own stuff at some point in the future.
@bradbrubaker Mar 2022
The "water/kerosene" part was my favorite lyric with the "prick/poke" bit a second. Cool stuff.
@sailingmagpie Mar 2022
The 80s vibe of this is incredible and strangely comes more from the funky guitar than the drum machine, I reckon. Love that catchy chorus and the fact that one of the lines is "you prick" is amazing. This track has a really galvanising feel to it, which is, I suppose, exactly what you were aiming for!
@balancelost Mar 2022
This is absolutely my bag. The sound of those guitars is amazing, and the big reverby drums and synths have such a cool mood. Definitely a fan of the bombastic pop direction of Vowl Sounds. Moar like this!
@loveonamixtape Mar 2022
This owns -- love the funky/disco-y/New Wave feel to this! Very cool different direction for you guys. Love how the vocals sound on this, and super cool, swaggery delivery -- you're more than pulling it off, @owl! The effect on the vocals definitely doesn't hurt, works super well. The "Born in flames" chorus is delicious -- especially love how the held out notes in the verses go into it.
@ayehahmur Feb 2022
Love it! I can't even pull up a comparison, but it's definitely authentic 80s. Specially love for the chorus harmonies, the bridge modulation and the thrustingly prominent bass guitar. Loads of fun.
@adforperu Feb 2022
Holy shit, the 80s vibes are strong here - Simple Minds, INXS, early-Talk Talk all coming to mind without being at all derivative. I feel like the saturation on @owl's voice is just.. perfect? Like... the most inspired production choice in the history of FAWM? Hyperbole; me?
I've just commented on another @owl track and said it was one of my favourites of hers this year, but I think this surpasses it? Might even be one of my favourite FAWM tracks full-stop, it's incredible. Very excited for the next Vowl Sounds album, now. @vomvorton's collaboration game this year has been amazing.
@thedutchwidows Feb 2022
I was not expecting these sounds. So much so, I did a double-take to make sure I was listening to what I thought I was listening to. This is freakin' awesome though. Got a 70s/80s new wave feel to it - lovely angular guitars - and the vocals are amazing, I would like an entire album of this.
@shortdan Feb 2022
I was wondering when I'd get to hear a Vowl Sounds track :-) Yes, this is a bit different from your usual stuff isn't it? You've definitely pulled it off though for sure! Melodically really catchy and full of energy. Nice work both!
@dng Feb 2022
I love this
@judypie Feb 2022
Oh my daysss, this is the greatest thing I have heard all week (except my Jedlie collab you understand)! You are SO clever, it sounds proper authentic, way to nail the sound man! Gold star to the pair of you! With kind permission, this shall be blasted in the gym later for my workout. I’ve finished typing but there’s still plenty of outtro left.. which I am not mad about! :D
@beat Feb 2022
Vowl Sounds forever! Yes.
What a great track and collaboration.
Chapeau to both of you.
Thank you for the joy.
@deena Feb 2022
Exciting track! Great lyrics, performance and super funky!
@richaaaay Feb 2022
Lots of cool elements to this. I like the long line short line component of the verse. The chorus is killer, particularly like how the end of the verse flows into the chorus. I love the bridge lyrics and the dynamic drop of intensity. Great collaboration!
@jimdgreen Feb 2022
Do I get a touch of the talking heads on here? I’m not sure but I’m liking it either way. A strong performance late in the month!
@sadloaf Feb 2022
This slaps. I definitely want those drums and bass brought up which would turn it into a full-bodied dance song.
@rubberbandage Feb 2022
This is so fricking rad, and a sound/side of @owl I’ve never heard before — I totally love the vibe. Who knew that twee could be so fiery ;-)
@ericlord Feb 2022
Really good! Love the production and the catchy melodies and the overall synth pop punk - a great piece!!! More!
@robynmackenzie Feb 2022
This is deliciously funky. Love that fuzzed-out vocal. Everything here is super solid, wonderful collab!
@coolparadiso Feb 2022
Wow this has the what i call inxs vibe musically! Solid soundscape, i feel i can see the band on stage. Great vox as well. Nice song indeed.
