This is actually about my husband's close work-colleague rather than a personal friend, but sadly everything else is true.
I wrote and recorded this quickly today in between birthday stuff.
I was glad I included a little part of the main theme from The Great Gate at Kiev (from Mussoursky's Pictures At An Exhibition) in the outro, as I've loved that whole thing since I was a teenager, particularly this final movement.
Technically I feel this is a 4 chord loop, but really it might be 5 as there is kinda a fifth chord but actually its one of the existing chords with a different passing note. Also there's a war on so who cares.
My friend is in her basement
Just outside of Kiev
She's slept 2 hours in the last 3 days
And now and now and now
They're bombing her village
CHORUS
That's what she texted.
Today it is my birthday
All I feel is sad
And angry, so angry, and hopeless too
Eating eating eating cake with my kids
CHORUS
That's what I texted.
Always when I thought of Kiev
I heard the sound of bells
Imagined the majesty of the Gate
Mussoursky Mussoursky Mussoursky
Seemed to love
BRIDGE
Now all I want
Is that sharp chime
Notification
That she is fine
OUTRO
I wait for her texting

Thank you for capturing the realities of emotion, uncertainty, and the connectedness of the world today. We feel this war all over. Your one-line chorus sums it up.

Hev, this is intense and all to real. I like how you unfolded your story, first she texted, your reply then your waiting. The juxtaposition between eating cake and being bombed is powerful. I really enjoyed the bridge too. It’s a sobering song but very well too.
