Feb 2022 acoustic pop paulcore
@vomvorton - Paul suggested meeting up to record something "acoustic-ish" at his house, so I drove there, and we did. Also I may have finished off the mix after drinking a 10.3% triple IPA so who knows what this actually sounds like. At no point did I shout "please help, Paul's making me do time signatures!" but I was certainly thinking it quite loudly.
Paul wrote the song and played guitar, cajon, sang.
I provided samosas and played ukulele, tambourine, synthesizer, sang.
Trace the length of a line of a mortar
Feel it flinch at my very touch
Last night standing in the cultural quarter
You give an inch they take a mile you know that much
I signed you like a cast a long time ago
To leave a real lasting impression
Last night standing in the cultural quarter
Caged it like an aging criminal
Are you rubble in situ,
debris in hiding
Holding your breath?
Are you battered and bruised?
Lost and confused.
Are you left behind?
Do you recognise this city,
Where caped crusaders scale new heights
Buoyed by luminescent shots & neon lights?
Your aching back
struggling to take the weight
and it's enough to break your heart
in the heart of the city
In the heart of the city
You broke my heart
Brick by brick.

I was fine with the 7/4, then I lost it! It never feels awkward or too angular though, each section has the perfect transition. Agree with Dan the 'aching back' section is gorgeous, both your vocals sound so great together in that bit. I know Paul especially doesn't like to stay on an idea too long (the mathy bastard) but I'm glad you did with that bit!

I listened to this; then I listened to it again while tapping to try and work out what the hell was going on and when. Ha! It’s quirky as hell is this - I really like it. The ‘Your aching back…’ section is really beautiful. Tom, I particularly love your vocal in this bit. Ace work guys :)

That is a cool rhythm, like an off-kilter Bo Diddley beat. I really love when you guys are singing together, and when you get to the "heart of the city" line you definitely hit on something emotional. The lyric is the kind of thing I like. It feels somehow vague and specific. It captures an emotion while leaving meaning right there on the tip of your brain, a nice trick, if you can pull it off, and you do. I'm all in favor of time signatures: 4/4, 6/8 on occasion, maybe 3/4 in a pinch

Yay for time signatures. Math uke is a tragically underused genre. The groove in this is very cool, and I particularly love when it switches into 6/4 in the "aching back" part. The melodies throughout are great, and for that final part they really hit the payoff.

I love this! The interlocking layers in the chorus (is it a chorus? The rubble in situ part?) do something very nice in my brain, and I love the way your voices sound together. The ukulele was a wonderful addition, so sparkly and sweet! The lyrics are great, very evocative.

This is very nice! The time signature without a beat as such makes me feel really unbalanced. But i think that’s a good quality sometimes and in this song. The vocals are really nicely done. Love the oh! BVs

Nice job, I hear Percy can play the bongos very well then? You nailed those complex time signatures. This sounds so live and fresh its great. Sounding a bit pet shop boys at parts which I wasn't expecting to compare. Shame I couldn't join you on this but I'm glad you managed to get something done, it sounds great.

So nice! Love the guitars playing off each other and the tight harmonies. Found myself stomping my foot along with this one!

Well aren’t you getting in some Fawm miles this year Vom! The samosas sound ACE!!
This has a really cool sound man, love your vocals together <3 feels like I’m round a campfire somewhat, roasting s’mores. :D

Oh man, the vocals are so very nice here. The overall atmosphere has that quirky pop vibe I like in this kind of stuff. And I'm jealous of that triple IPA! I only had a few regular ones tonight.
