Feb 2022 acoustic-one-take ukraine
a bit rough but it felt important to write about Ukraine, given how little else I can actually do... The lyrics are based in part on a facebook post by one of my Ukrainian friends.
We have our own culture
We have our own history
We have our own language
We are our own country
You can’t take that away from us, no you can’t take that away from us
You send in tanks and you drop your bombs
You taunt us with artillery mobs
You coerce and control but our hearts are our own
You can’t take that away from us, no you can’t take that away from us
Oh how? Oh how? Oh how?
You stake your claim and you force your way
You circle round like a bird of prey
You chain us down, we were born to be free
You can’t take that away from us, no you can’t take that away from us
Oh how? Oh how? Oh how?
We have our own culture
We have our own history
We have our own language
We are our own country
You can’t take that away from us, no you can’t take that away from us

Haunting, bluesy melody. Powerful, sad lyrics. Love it, Serene.

Wonderful perspective, that no matter what, they are unique and Ukrainian in their hearts. Beautifully sad lyric and vocal. Thank you for sharing your song on the Ukraine Thread.

This is a beautiful tribute. Powerful in its gentle and haunting delivery, there’s a beautiful defiance in the track but also a tenderness. I think you’ve done a great job of adding a voice of support and solidarity.

Great work Serene. This is powerful. Such an important song to sing. The guitar works beautifully and your voice is perfect for this to. A very heartfelt and inspired performance.

i like the contrast between the sweet almost whispering vocals and the defiance of the lyrics: 'you can't take that away from us' 'we have our own' really evocative and haunting.

Oh! Thank you for making this song. I've also been thinking I need to write about Ukraine, but haven't had the courage. Well done. Such a haunting song.
