I threw myself out from under my sheet
Had to face my big deceit
Three blocks later I’m in the bar
Where I fell for you with your red guitar
I see your face and I’d kiss your feet
I hear your voice and my self-defeat
You put me on the shelf and I can only blame myself
Every time you see me you just roll your eyes
I said it was just coffee – you said it was lies
Now I’m up all night thinking of you
Without the help of that morning brew
I hear you sing and I start to pine
It’s never ever gonna be just fine
You put me on the shelf and I can only blame myself
You got take the long view on these kinds of things
That love comes with all kinds of strings
Tie em up with a knot and bow and who’ll untie them you’ll never know
I snuck down the alley near Mulberry Street
Thinking we could casually meet
I just don’t know how to apologize
You won’t accept my alibi
Got you perfume - a bottle of wine
You sent me the empties
You said I’m a swine
You put me on the shelf and damn I can only blame myself
You got take the long view on these kinds of things
That love comes with all kinds of strings
Tie em up with a knot and bow and who’ll untie them you’ll never know
The guys in the front row are like mockingbirds
Hanging on your smile and your every word
They love that brand new song
About how we never got along
Sitting in the back I’m waiting in the dark
Thinking that from here I could renew that spark
But you put me on the shelf I can only blame myself

Great write: the storytelling and playful rhymes go perfectly with the great swing feel of the melody.
