Feb 2022 acapella
I heard a song recently that was a take on The Little Mermaid where the mermaid was a siren and the sea witch was trying to protect the prince by taking her voice. So maybe that's why my mermaid song came out so sinister. If I get a chance to play with this later I'd love to add some vocal harmonies.
Chorus:
Oh beware of the voice that will call you, call you,
Flee from the sea-king’s daughter
When her song has you bound you will surely be drowned
Don’t you go down to the water
Under the moon you may see her, see her
Colder than snow and paler
Weaving her spell from the ocean swell
Hunting a hapless sailor
(chorus)
Once you have heard, it will draw you, draw you,
Fill you with awe and wonder
Salt of her kiss is a moment’s bliss
Then she will draw you under
(chorus)
How do I know, you may ask me, ask me,
How can I name this terror?
Once I drew near when her song called clear
That was my fatal error
(chorus)
I ran away from the seashore, seashore,
So she might never find me
Under the sound of my footsteps’ pound
Laughter rang out behind me
(chorus)
Though I escaped from her clutches, clutches
Thinking myself so clever
Like a fish on a hook my poor heart she took
Now I am hers forever
(chorus 2x)

I love this story and oh, yes, harmonies! I was singing along after the first verse and chorus in wandering harmonies, this song is made for them. Very nice!

A truly compelling rhythm, like the call of a siren or the constant eddy of a whirlpool. The vocals, standing astride the worlds of the sea shanty and the Celtic folk song, fill the mind with a veritable orchestra in themselves - they provide a beautiful clear outline that my own consciousness fills with pipes, horns, violins and the echoing rounds of a choir. Amazing how you accomplished so much richness with such a minimal presentation.

Love this, great tale and you maintain a great rhythm and stay in tune for an acapella, this was great! I sang harmonies along with you, so fun for me, I think harmonies will be really good. This was fun and a great listen!!

What a lovely and intriguing melody. Very mesmerizing, like a siren, but also quite catchy. Beautiful storytelling in these great lyrics. This shows how much a great melody can stand on its own - no production or musical accompaniment needed. I agree with you, though, that adding some harmonies would be nice too, but it's also very strong as is. Well done. Glad I stopped by to hear this one.
