Part of a concept album where I write a song from the perspective of one of the people in each chapter of the book of Mark.
Mark 15 (Centurion)
Drop D
E
A crown of thorns upon his head
We flog his back until he’s almost dead
Soon enough he’ll be hanging high
A not so subtle warning for the passersby
A purple cloak for the King of the Jews
Hail, Hail and a funny salute
Pay him homage upon our knees
Time to carry out Pilate’s decrees
Can’t carry the wood because he’s too weak
So we force it on some guy from Cyrene
Reached the spot on the top of the hill
Time to grab a hammer and a nail
The crowd arrives to pick their spots
The entertainment is to jeer and to mock
“He saved others but he can’t save himself”
Elicits laughs from everyone else
I don’t understand what his words meant
Probably some kind of last-minute lament
A loud cry and he breathes his last
I didn’t think he’d die so fast
The dignity that he showed on the cross
It puts me at a bit of a loss
The way he died just seems so odd
Surely, this man was a Son of God

Kind of an acoustic grunge feel to this song. Good use of personification and narrative perspective!
