Feb 2022 indie alternative new-wave synths acoustic epic progressive pop lofi rock
This is the longest song I've ever written - by a long shot.
It was always meant to be epic, but THIS epic wasn't the original plan. I recorded a basic backing track back in the first week of February, then completely forgot about it - few nights ago I started a new version.
Then the next day when I went to load it up again I discovered the first version... they were at different tempos with different arrangements, different lead parts and one of them had a key change absent in the other... at first I was 'uh oh' and then I realised I could just mash the parts together.
Unfortunately they were recorded at different tempos, so one had to be slightly sped up to fit - while that's no problem for the synths, I didn't want to redo the guitar so it's literally just been digitally sped up. No 'Strawberry Fields' nonsense here though - it's 2022, you don't need to change the pitch to change the speed!
Anyway. Even at nearly 11 minutes long it's still a demo, so there are a few janky transitions and the vocal was a 15-minute recording job, writing the lyrics as I go, so it could do with some better takes and more careful mixing one day. But for now it'll do.
I will probably never write a song this long ever again. Before this, the longest I think was maybe 6 or 7 minutes.

I wish I had learned how to swim
I bet I could do anything
I don’t even need to be the best in the world
I wish I had gone overseas
you never know what you’re gonna see
I’m bored of the world on the screen in your eyes
I wish I had learned how to drive
then I would know how to be alive
I played it too safe for my age
I don’t believe in American dreams
I wish I had learned how to swim
I bet I could do anything
I don’t even need to be the best in the world
I wish I had gone to boarding school
but I was just ten and such a fool
and there’s no way I’d go there now
they ruin young life
I wish I had played less guitar
and spent more time with the calculator
but I couldn’t resist very long
you don’t win friends with maths
they got in there first long ago
they didn’t leave a thing
they stole it away long ago
they didn’t leave a thing
they plundered it all long ago
and left us all behind
and they won’t give up and just die off
they’ll take us to their grave
I wish I was born a wealthy man
with nothing to do but sit on my hands
then I wouldn’t be so unsure about this
I wish I had learned how to swim
I bet I could do anything
I don’t even need to be the best
they ruin young life

The melody is so catchy yet so strange! The whole thing modulates in wonderful ways. Almost reminded of Cardiacs with the melodic progression. And the synthwork is wonderful.

This could be my favourite song you’ve done. The melodies are amazing. The way the song builds is spot on. It honestly didn’t feel as long as 11 minutes. I enjoyed every second

Great melody and sound design. I love that the lyrics have space to breathe, and how the intensity builds over time, and then is broken in the middle before the next section. Amazing song

Love your melody of longing and these great lyrics of regret for not learning more, challenging oneself more in life. But I think these words are also about the rich not sharing their fortune and power. This is quite a production, but a thoroughly enjoyable one. I really like all the variety in the different movements of music. What a catchy melody! What a great song!

Ahhhhh technology! I love it, because this song is epic and wonderful. Loving every second and worth the extra work and time. The song cruises along with an awesome purpose and drive. Sweet break and a cool sounding solo! Great hooks, awesome melody and the whole song just sounds fantastic! Glad you did the extra work to figure out how to combine everything. Amazing song.
