Feb 2022 ss022522g superskirmish survival slothcore acoustic-guitar acoustic-bass instrumental
Last weekend I attended a songwriting workshop where one of the instructors talked about having an art trap in proximity to daily activity to inspire creativity. I mentioned that I was stealing that for a song idea. Sometimes I use a chord prog ression based on which letters of A through G are in a phrase. Earlier today I was thinking that 'art trap' only had the letter A. Then at dinner my wife and I were watching a Tom Waits video from the 80's. The name 'Tom Waits' only has an A. Then I clicked on this skirmish prompt 'Survival' by @taracraig. 'Survival' also only has an 'A'. Thus the title. Then I thought it would be fun to do an instrumental slothcore. So I tuned a guitar to a slack open A6 AAC#F#AE and set the tempo to 40 bpm. Improvised a guitar track, acoustic bass track, and cello track all well mostly except for a bit at the end with the cello, using the notes in the A6 chord. Used the 'Through the Walls' Garageband master track setting.

Just by reading the liner notes first I could tell this was going to be exactly the kind of cool, weird stuff that I love. I wasn't wrong, this is just a lovely pond of sound to float around in.

I adore the throaty sound of this track. It resonates in basically every way. Sparse, spare, intense -- totally great results from your trap.

Heady. Techy. And cool. In anticpation of the cello. . . not your traditional cello sound. This is out there and Tom Waits would be honored!

This was a lovely experience, Andy! Beautiful and relaxing soundscape, and I love the story behind it!

A little fast but not bad. :)
Seriously this is good. Definitely got the sloth vibe to it.

definitely could see this in soundtrack for a thriller of some kind. I first started listening through my phone speaker but saw @crutherford note about headphones so I grabbed mine. So glad I did! There’s such a richness to this track and the cello is gorgeous. Beautifully done!

Thanks for the thorough description in your liner notes - very informative. I like the way you come up with ideas for experimentation. This piece turned out very well - I'm enjoying listening. Love that title as well!

I can always make the time to listen to some slothcore, particularly when Tom Waits is involved. This is fun; dark and ominous, the sort of thing that would be playing in a David Lynch movie when things get particularly weird. Plenty going on - feels much shorter than it actually is.
And that's a really clever compositional trick. I can see myself using that one!

Oh very nappy slothcore! Spot in the genre sweet spot! Very nice and the legendary cello appears

This has to be a finalist for “Best Song Title of FAWM 2022”! The track is delightfully trance-inducing, and your liner notes are great. Very creative, fun skirmishing!

firstly, i'm over the moon i'm listening to this with headphones on.
secondly, i adore your liner notes.
thirdly, this feels like a massage... but scary... i really like that juxtaposition.
fourthly, that title of yours wins the internet

Hail to the Skirmish! Great inspired piece Andy!

So much delicious bass goodness. The picture in my head when I read the title is priceless. Poor Tom, waiting in that trap. This mirrors his dark experimental weirdness. Also, I love that "Then I thought it would be fun to do an instrumental slothcore" is a real thing.

Evocative droney music. The harmonics are welcome highlights. Some of the cello? is almost vocal. I really like cellos.

Now I want to sit and listen to this looped for an hour and write a song called Fly Paper. Cool concept. I like the A-G technique to like writing chord progressions and melodies from phone numbers.
