Bill - Nancy's Lyrics tell a story about of a guy whose wife has moved out on him. Life isn't fun any more. What can you do? What can you say to get things back to where you were before winter set in and the world got cold and lonely? In trying to sing the lyrics from the heart, some of the wording got changed. I attempted to catch the feeling level in the music. but after a while all my songs begin to sound like each other to me.
What Can You Do?
The walnut leaves are almost gone
Sugar maple's hanging on
Scraps of yellow, flutter down
Scatter on the frozen ground
And you
As for you
As for you
What can you do?
Last time winter showed its face
We were in our other place
Out all day, without gloves
Moving boxes, still in love
And you
As for you
As for you
What can you do?
What else am I gonna say
How long can I live this way?
Watching reruns, making toast
Acting like a sulky ghost
And you
As for you
As for you
What can you do?
Tear it up, burn it down
What could turn us back around
Back to talking, back to life
Me your husband, you my wife
And you
As for you
As for you
What can you do?
What can you do?
As for you
You

Poignant heart tugging lyrics perfectly put to music! Wonderful marriage of music and lyric!

Sad but beautiful lyrics, put into music very emotionally. And the waltz rhythm fits perfectly. I like the line "moving boxes, still in love" best... then all doors were still open.

Hey, this is great, I like Bill's adaptations to the lyrics, they sound more conversational and real. And the verses paint a vivid story, though the simplicity and redundancy of "making toast" really sticks out to me. Surprised, however, to learn this is the male's perspective, not the wife's. I guess I expect introspection from the female . . .
