I think my Muse might be done with Musickation. However, she still seems up for some Pontification. And so, I present the first in a series of songs I will dub "Lyrics-At-Work" - because, well, I wrote them at work.
This one harkens back to my youth & my days as a Sea Scout. It's a wee bit o'a sea shanty (sans musique) that if you'd like to put to music, I'd love to hear the results.
For those unfamiliar with the Brittish Naval Watch system, each day is divided up into various watches & time is kept aboard the ship with the ringing of the ship's bell on every half hour. There are eight bells to a regular watch (i.e. 4 hour watches), but there are two so-called "Dog Watches" that are only 4 bells long each. This allowed for a fair distribution of shifts for the crew aboard the ship. Traditionnally, Mutinies (if they were to happen) would often start at the beginning of the First Dog Watch.
I tried to touch on a bunch of nautical clichés with this, I think I did a decent job of that, Hope you enjoy!
See You In The Shadows…
The Dog Watch
=============
When Davey Jones called
I swore I heard
The Banshee's song
The ship's bell tolled
The Dog Watch had begun
Heave the ankor chain
Raise it from the depths
Heed the bo'sun's pipe
Raise your voices high
Heave-ho a tally-ho!
This life of salt & brine
The Dog Watch will be the death of me
In the depths I will reside
Up the mizzen mast
I climbed to avoid
The Siren's song
Then the ship's bell tolled twice
The Dog Watch continued on
Heave the ankor chain
Raise it from the depths
Heed the bo'sun's pipe
Raise your voices high
Heave-ho a tally-ho!
This life of salt & brine
The Dog Watch will be the death of me
In the depths I will reside
The forcast at the for'castle
Called forth
The Kraken's hate
Then the ship's bell tolled three times
The Dog Watch was getting late
Heave the ankor chain
Raise it from the depths
Heed the bo'sun's pipe
Raise your voices high
Heave-ho a tally-ho!
This life of salt & brine
The Dog Watch will be the death of me
Bound and chained on the quarter deck
Bowed down
To the Captain;s Daughter
As the ship's bell tolled four times
I was thrown into the water
Heave the ankor chain
Raise it from the depths
Heed the bo'sun's pipe
Raise your voices high
Heave-ho a tally-ho!
This life of salt & brine
The Dog Watch will be the death of me
In the depths I will reside
In the depths I will reside

This would make a great tune... with some rolling and heaving droney stuff and of course lots of bells :D One to come back to for sure!

Would love to hear this to music! Glad you’re still up for pontification. Can imagine the rhythmical quality of the lyrics pairing well with some trippy sounds. Hopefully you’ll make it someday.

This is great and I think will sound awesome when set to music. When I read it The Pogues popped into my head and I think it would be suited to their style
