Feb 2022 60s-soul northern-soul fauxtown
I feel like most of my stuff this year has been quite laid back and chilled, so I thought it'd be cool to do something a bit more up tempo. I've had the title for this written on my phone for ages, so it's nice to finally get around to using it!
It does seem a bit glib to be moaning about the awful government we have in the UK at the moment, considering there's a literal authoritarian dictator currently attacking his neighbours but I feel like, just because there are worse governments out there, doesn't mean we shouldn't demand better of ours.
Some of the lyrics will definitely change when I go back to this one and it could probably do with another couple of hours work on the mix and arrangement but I'm pretty happy with it. Plus, I've got loads of half finished songs that I need to get to, otherwise I'm not gonna hit 14!
Apologies to Damon Albarn for ripping off the sound of his last album for the bridge. I assume he reads my FAWM profile avidly.

Gentrify me
Commodify me
So please ignore the contradiction
While we hide our dereliction
Glorify me
Classify me
Hitch your wagon to bent politicians
So you can swallow this work of fiction
Identify me
Electrify me
Intellectual malnutrition
But still expect benediction
Deify me
Gaslit by me
No surprise I've slipped my disguise
I'll put it back when the cameras roll
Gentrify me, Gentrify me
Gentrify me, Gentrify me
Gentrify me, Gentrify me
Gentrify me, Gentrify me

Great mix of tones on this, and beaut arrangement too - love when the strings and horns come in. It's got a bit of an Amy Winehouse/Daptone soul feel about it, classic but modern and all your own! Cool concept for the song too.

Motown yeah! funky bass! church organ! and I like how your vocal occasionally has a touch of the Brett Anderson wail in it in the gentrify/commodify lines.

This is so good! Great bass riff and beat. Strong lyrics and singing. Love the line "Intellectual malnutrition." Those keyboards are so cool!
@susyblue Feb 2022
Awesome performance and production here - love the strings! Also love the 'gentrify me' bit jumping up high. Tasty song!

That bassline is perfection onna STICK, it's the perfect foil for the vocal melody, which is just as strong. Got a strong Pet Shop Boys vibe off that chorus, especially when the strings come on. Really really cool.

Nails that 60s vibe.
@dianaviney Feb 2022
Enjoyed this...such a cool groove.
Love the last part (vocals and your keyboard)
I am in the same boat with lots of sketches on my phone.
Good luck!

Oh yessss this is a bopppp I’m here for the political message it’s lyrics are pumping “hitch your wagon to vent politicians- intellectual malnutrition “ - the groove of this is sick. I’m so glad you decided to try something with a different vibe

Yeah, don't ignore other world issues, but don't let them hide focus on local issues either. Wonderful style here - I love all the sounds you have used and this just has a classic vibe to it. I can't place any specific timeline though because you've blended a lot of wonderful things. Awesome lyrics and use of the repeated ...me rhymes. really strong song (and a really great listen as well) :)

Love the subtle distortion on the vocals, and nailing those falsetto bits. The groove and vibe is tight. I was hoping/waiting for a bit of wailing on that organ to punch me in the face, but by the end of the song it still felt like a complete musical work that was nicely executed. I loved the lyrics also! Awesome work!

I love how you melded the sounds of 60s soul and 90s Britpop into this really groovy synthesis! And I totally agree that even if there are worse issues going on in the larger world, it doesn't mean we can't point out the smaller issues that perhaps hit a little closer to home for us on a personal level. Loving the creative instrumentation, and your singing voice is so warm and entertaining. Great song!
