The title might refer to a city in Iowa or a couch .... this was a challenge to play and sing, a little too complicated and a key or two above my comfortable range. I'm lousy at transposing ... one of these days, perhaps.
DAVENPORT
I wrote my name and number on a napkin at the bar,
if I had the nerve to share it.
I don’t know who you are – a mystery that I can’t solve, ‘cause I can’t find the clues.
You try to catch my eye but I keep looking at my shoes.
Damn this world. It won’t stand still.
It keeps on spinning ‘round.
I wish I had the nerve to speak, but I can’t make a sound.
You sit there, so impatiently.
You’re looking at your watch
while I sit here and drown myself
in water mixed with scotch.
Love is only possible for handsome, brilliant men.
I’m none of these, a lesson learned, time and time again.
Nothing lasts forever, and I guess it’s just as well.
The road to good intentions is only paved with hell.
And 2 a.m. is closing time; there’s nothing left to do,
and you have found some lucky man
to take on home with you.
I’ll pay the tab, get out of here, but maybe –
just in case – I’ll look for you tomorrow night,
same seat, same time, same place

This is another awkwardly humorous gem. The floundering ache is palpable. Regarding the key being out of your comfort range, you pull it off well.

Another classic! Really like your songs man. You make it seem effortless. I really appreciate the mood and feel in this one.

Ha ha, you got me laughing out loud at this one. Great lyric writing.
You try to catch my eye but I keep looking at my shoes. is such a great line. Also the road to good intentions is paved with hell.
I love this kind of witty lyric.
