Feb 2022 acoustic singer-songwriter girl-with-guitar acoustic-one-take
The writing of this song is not chronological. I started with the chorus, which came from some nonsense improv-ing, then verse three, verse two, and finally verse one. All that was finished nearly a week ago, but it felt like something was missing. I had tried a bridge earlier, and it had not gone well––only in reaching out to a friend about the title line did inspiration bonk me with its sparkly talking stick and set me off. Hope you like it!
Tell me something you shouldn’t;
and if I’m honest, I couldn’t—
Every word is a bullet,
and I’m not aiming wide
Good times for a bad break.
High hopes in a new shape.
My thoughts in a cascade
as I try to realign.
I believed in you,
or who you let me see.
I denied the truth
until I saw the murder scene.
What’s this? You left all your pieces of me.
And if I could find my voice, I would scream.
I stare blank at the floor;
I have nothing to look up for.
What’s this? First one in was the first one to leave.
And you left me.
Sunsets from the rooftop;
late nights trying not to get caught;
said it’s everything you want—
at least, it used to be.
However the card’s played,
smoke screen for your charade,
you wanted a getaway
more than anything.
You locked your eyes with mine,
and I thought that was proof
until you cut my line,
and all the while, I reached for you.
What’s this? You left all your pieces of me.
And if I could find my voice, I would scream.
I stare blank at the floor;
I have nothing to look up for.
What’s this? First one in was the first one to leave.
And you left me—
heartless, broken,
needing something more.
You came in reckless, joking
this love ruled them all.
Then you left me doubtful, frozen
like a work of stone
when you came in leaving, saying
‘I won’t let you fall.’
Maybe I’m still bitter
I didn’t turn out the winner,
but that don’t make me a sinner;
I’ll get over it.
Change thrives in the sunlight.
And you think that you did right.
But I wonder if sometimes
there’s anything you miss.
What’s this? You left all your pieces of me.
And if I could find my voice, I would scream.
I stare blank at the floor;
I have nothing to look up for.
What’s this? First one in was the first one to leave.
And you let me fall—
––all the pieces of me.
And if I could find my voice, I would scream.
I stare blank at the floor;
I have nothing to look up for.
What’s this? First one in was the first one to leave.
And you let me.

Very melodic - love the phrasing of the title, in contrast to the rest. Good lyrics too, and a lot of them. I like it.
