Feb 2022 orchestral meditative
guatecoop: I've known Jake @gilhari for many years! He is a very good friend of my brother and I have always been very fond of him. He has always been a wildly creative and introspective person and now we have the pleasure of enjoying his writing. He also is a really good singer and he wanted to sing on this one...and I said YES! I loved his lyric "Counting Birds" and oddly the theme and focus of his writing was exactly the same as what I had composed the night before (A Meditation in Snowfall) and I had said that in the comment that I made. Well, so here they are together. It is so great to hear Jake singing again!! I appreciate you reaching out and offering your words and melody to complete this song! Really beautiful and thoughtful all the way through.
gilhari: thank you @guatecoop! It was really amazing to work on this sort of creative project again after so long away from songwriting or singing. The music has this quality to it that matched up so well with my own emotional state while writing this. Thank you to @zeecoop for the mixing and trying to get my out of practice voice a little nicer… without Rob and John this never would have happened— much love to them…
Counting birds
Counting birds
As numerous as stars
I left some things
in my memories
of summer evenings
when we played
Counting birds
as numerous as stars
Counting memories
Counting stars
The nighthawks sing
The whip-poor-will too
The bobwhite hides in the grass
Memories
of their song
Oh if the memory
of their song
Could bring back
those nights
Oh if the memories
Could place me
back in that time
The nighthawks would sing
The whip-poor-will would too
The bobwhite hides in the grass

Wonderful atmospheric piece. I could see this as the central music accompanying a documentary on the decline in bird species.
I felt like I was in some "Redwood Cathedral" as this developed.

Lovely lyrics and your voice has a great underlined emotional to it. My grandfather passed away last year, and this made me smile and think of him again. He had books on birds and trees, and would point to birds and tell me about them when we saw them around his yard, or would show me a leaf and tell me about the tree. Thanks for the beautiful song from both of you and the memories it stirred.

It’s been over 30 years since gilhari and I have written songs together so it was quite amazing to hear him come up with vocal ideas for this music. Very cool how they connected in theme and as always, it is an unexpectedly wonderful melody. I love how this fits together. It is just a beautiful song!

oh yeah this is so etheral, i adore the vocals. You're projecting your lyrics with such sincerity it sounds like you've been doing it for years. I love the chord progressions in this as well and it really does take me to a different unique space of listening. Top work all of you

Well you had me on counting birds! For some reason i have a so many great bird song favourites (bill callahan the winner) a haunting ballad this, almost church organ like at times. The slowness of the vocal is just right to keep the tension between the parts.
