Ooh look, another true story breakup song! I'm so grateful every day that I no longer live that insanity. This song was born of FAWM prompt #52: emphasize repetitions, they can be words, music, words, music, words, music, words, music.
And please pay no attention to how horribly off my timing got on the last chorus. It's late and I'm tired. Three more songs in four more days!!! Gotta. keep. moving.
Do you know what you do to me (do to me)
You treat me so brutally (brutally)
Why do you withhold from me (withhold from me)
You have all the control of me (control of me)
Why can’t you just leave me be
I just want to heal in peace
The definition of insanity
Is repeating the same thing
While expecting
A new result
The less that you give to me (give to me)
The more that I pity me (pity me).
I’m really not proud of it (proud of it)
Each time I get crowded out (crowded out)
Why can’t you just leave me be
I just want to heal in peace
The definition of insanity
Is repeating the same thing
While expecting
A new result
You’re the expert at doling out crumbs
Just enough to keep me under your thumb
Draw me in, withdraw, repeat
The vicious cycle is complete
Why can’t you just leave me be
I just want to heal in peace
The definition of insanity
Is repeating the same thing
While expecting
A new result

Loved it. It sounds great. Glad you've left that insanity as well, but super glad you got a song out of it!

This is really lovely. The "leave me be"s jump out, and are delicious, but the whole thing has a lovely thread running through it. The shiny guitar and the voice work really well together, and the low key drums add a bit of punch. Lovely voice and melody throughout.

This is such a well-written song with so many memorable melodic ideas! I love your harmonies on the refrain--and don't worry about the timing, multitrack recording can be so difficult sometimes! This really reminds me of Phoebe Bridgers's "Motion Sickness" in the way that it describes a toxic relationship, but definitely with more laidback folk influences. Thanks so much for sharing this awesome song, and I'm so glad you're at a much better place in your life now!
