Feb 2022 singer-songwriter ballad guitar morning
This was originally my third song for FAWM this year, but since anything and everything has gotten in the way of songwriting this year, it slid to the back of my priority list as everything else got first dibs on my attention. I finally had some time today to dive back into this one and add the production elements I have desperately wanted to add for weeks. I know that FAWM is supposed to be about the songwriting and not the production, but I truly cannot help myself; I refuse to release something that does not convey my vision for the song, even if it means waiting a little while longer.
I started out writing this within the hour and a half I had in between lessons, and it was pretty jank. I took the acoustic guitar part I recorded and did some editing to change the chord progression around a bit after the fact, and then I layered the electric guitar part on top of that. I also added some trumpet parts to fill in the empty space and to add interest to the mix. The vocal mixing and the balance of the bass guitar in the mix is still a bit wonky, but it more or less gets the point across.
[Verse 1]
Morning when I open up my eyes
I feel the dread seeping back inside
I nestle close to you
Before there’s everything to do
With you I wish to stay
[Chorus]
Love to start my day
Beside your sleepy face
The whole day I long to melt inside your warm embrace
Anxiety away
When beside you I lay
When it comes time to rise I hesitate
(Oh my god, 6:00 got here way too soon.)
[Verse 2]
Morning when I get into my car
I think of you and how I got to start
My day right by your side
At least one thing’s going right
[Bridge]
Hours pass by
After goodbye
You’re the breath in my sigh
Ah
[Chorus 2]
Love to start my day
Beside your sleepy face
The whole day I long to melt inside your warm embrace
Anxiety away
When at my side you lay
When it comes time to rise I have to wait

Wow! I just love all the facets of this song!! So many Beatles stylistic elements: from the instrumentation to the chord progression to the way you sing and harmonize, and also the addition of the trumpet (very much like "Penny Lane"). You have clever ideas for both the basic bones of the song, but also the production end of things. This song is the complete package in my opinion: great melody, harmony, lyrics, style to fit the message, and post production editing. Bravo! Looking forward to your next song!
