Feb 2022 mining-town-dying rock anthem small-town-life
I love doing my collabs with John - we try to do at least one each Fawm & 50/90. He usually feeds me a lyric about small town life, and this one is excellent and no exception.
John
We have a love of similar old town issues and places and Jeff always delivers so well on my lyrics.
V1 The men stand on street corners
Pushing baby prams
They bought at the market peak
They fell for the company scam
V2 Once the mines were teeming
But the staff flew in and out
The people now left behind
have to go without
C The welfare state is well and good
They get you out a bind
They help put food on the table
But cannot soothe the mind
No they cannot soothe the mind
V3 The town park lays silent
No children anywhere
Dismal faces all around
It really isn't fair
V4 The young are moving out
To places far away
There's really nothing left
To make them want to stay
C The welfare state is well and good
They get you out a bind
They help put food on the table
But cannot soothe the mind
B A Town with few young people
A Town now in decay
Dying now the mines have gone
It has known a better day
C The welfare state is well and good
They get you out a bind
They help put food on the table
But cannot soothe the mind

The start of this has a kind of Calexico sound of dusty lost hope, yum yum! Or maybe a bit Midlake, both great bands... the production on this is great, everything sounds brilliant. One thing I might do is to tone down the vocal effect (a bit of phase?).
I thought the bridge was particulalry effective, would I be gready to ask for more? I think there is room, and it seems to finish quite quickly after the bridge, I'd think about doubling the chorus. Just some suggestions, great song, a keeper!

I feel that this track was formed from the descriptors in this write. A great fit, the oppression feeling is there. Really like the sing on this and chorus.
"They fell for the company scam"
That line of being jerked around by your own job really sets the tone on this. Enjoyed my listen, GREAT Collab!!

Being an immigrant from a tiny island, I haven't spent much time in old small towns. This offered a perspective I am not often exposed to and I really appreciate that. It's always striking to me how much my home country faces similar issues to small towns in America. Slightly different contexts, same story. Really enjoyed this, well done.

Love the start of this. That simple guitar with that ominous-sounding drum rhythm in the back. Very cool sound. And then your vocals kick in, and it's a good addition, sitting nicely on top of the music. Nice slow guitar solo -- full of emotion. Lyrics are well-written. Yeah, this is a very good song. Nice collaboration! #tit4tat

Strong words and harsh guitars. I like it !

I love a good story telling lyric. I'm into the production of the demo too - The drums sound big and far away, acoustic is full and clean and vocals sound great. Sweet collab. Cheers.

A really moving song. It must be truly sad when your home town fails. Unfortunately, that's often the fate of a one-industry town. Still, where we grow up always has special meaning to us. This is a wonderful set of lyrics, they just roll off the tongue in a nice set meter that makes creating a melody so very easy and with carefully chosen words expressing a vivid and clear message. Love these lyrics! This setting for them is lovely too. This music and vocal conveys the sadness beautifully. Well done both of you.

I'm laughing at myself because I read #mining-town and #dying-rock instead of #mining-town-dying and #rock. I hit it because I wanted to know how #dying-rock sounds like!
I can relate a lot to these lyrics cause there are former mining towns nearby and there are lots of ruins and lost place. I like the slight psychedelic alt rock you did here. The delayed drums have something punchy and eerie. Well appreciated. The bassline is so strong and the lyrics are great. This collab is great. #tit4tat

Powerful, direct lyric. And the musical take is both ominous and bittersweet, and sounds great in headphones. A collab that seems like it was meant to happen - good one!

Really dig the acoustic guitar accompanied by that second guitar riff. After the first chorus the sustain in the little guitar solo keeps it simple but effective. Great song structure with a build in dynamics towards the end. The lyrics tell a cohesive story with a significant message communicated in the last two lines of the chorus. Great vocals by Jeff as usual!. Well done!

Nice big beat that blends really well with the acoustic guitars. You've managed to get a really rich sound with them. Great Collab.
@wacha Feb 2022
This is a great collaboration, the arrangement fits lyrics perfectly. That chorus is a amazing! The arrangement feels full but is just sparse enough to create almost a desperate feeling. Nice work to both of you!
@panch Feb 2022
A really strong message here, perfectly summing up those places reliant on fading industries and left behind, and sympathetically set to music.
