my friend Dave Street wrote these lyrics in 1988 and sent them to me in 2022. they're still pretty poignant.
the police have gone to the beach
where they are safely out of reach
half crazed crowds patrol the streets
accusing everyone they meet
measuring the length of everyone’s hair
but there’s no sign of life anywhere
tv screens flash on and off
daytime doctors tell the world to cough
naked nurses roam hospital wards
playing wheel of fortune with Ouija boards
even the ghosts groan nothing is fair
and there’s no sign of life anywhere
there’s plenty of people
and plenty of sounds
and some indication
of life underground
there’s ditches and switches
with cables running through
lots of new inventions
but nothing really new
the flying saucers
are all going back
deciding that earth
is too far out of whack
super salesmen try
to give it all away
while game show hosts
say ‘it’s time to play”
but the sponsors are filled with despair
‘cause there’s no sign of life anywhere
tv screens flash on and off
daytime doctors tell the world to cough
naked nurses roam hospital wards
playing wheel of fortune with Ouija boards
even the ghosts groan nothing is fair
and there’s no sign of life anywhere
even the ghosts groan nothing is fair
and there’s no sign of life anywhere

Love the punky vibe. Proper old school punk and I was there first time around.
