Feb 2022 noguitar fade allthetags
I was reading some article a while back (link long lost) about how songs don't fade anymore since the early 90's or something, and about how songs fading was to make them radio length initially. As a kid growing up in the 90's, fade outs did start to feel like a cop-out sort of ending, but they also kinda made songs seem eternal or like you were just getting some sample of something even bigger.
Anyway, I was going to write this more from the point of view of a relationship fading out, but I've wrote too many break up songs, so I will merely imply it and then explicitly state it in the liner notes regardless.
I am so out of my depth here production wise, so I'm not sure I can handle the amount of constructive criticism that might come my way aha! There is a jazz drum beat with some Trex 606 drum layered on top, for reasons I knew at the time, and there are some pitch shifting effects on various vocals, there is some tape cassette effect on the final mix (mix = strong word) and some delay on some of the twinkly synths and this is 500% more stuff than I would normally do which is probably why it sounds so heavy and cluttered and BREATHE.
Oooh, also, four chord challenge, which is the reason I did all this in the first place
The lyrics are just lazy references to songs that fade.
But still the band marches away
under old neptunes mystic gaze
still tapping out that beat, cross fields forever
and as the colours slide away,
just remember that things fade,
so they can end
and we're just another song, spinning on,
on the radio.

I'm loving the groove you have to this because it feels sort of old timey but the synths make it feel like a new thing at the same time. The melodies also have that sort of retro feel to them but the off kilter harmonies give it something sort of new. Neat making the lyrics meta because I think it pairs pretty nicely with this sort of groove.

Mmm lofi synths, I really like the different rhythms they create on each side of the stereo field and the noisy tape vibes are lovely. I remember having a friend at college who was convinced that fading out a song was some kind of "artistic betrayal", I never really could figure out why,

That beat with the catchy synth loop on top is great! I definitely expected more of a fadeout at the end than I got after all the liner notes :) I don’t know what all the song references in the lyrics are but they have a great feel, I especially like that closing refrain and “as the colours slide away”.

Lazy references are the best kind of reference, and this sort of loose connection where the meaning isn't smacking you over the head is exactly my jam. The slightly off key synths are amazing, and I really like how you panned them. Particularly the sort of lead organ parts. It's hard to take in in one go but when it hits, it really hits.
