The music and melody for this one pretty much arrived as one just as I was finishing up working on another track. It’s about as simple as they come, but with the vocal laid so bare, there absolutely no way I was going to pen the words to this for everyone to hear! Thankfully, and after minimal pleading, the truly gifted @adamdale78 wrote this is wonderful short tale of watching the birds fish under water on the lake in Finland. But dark things can happen in a small scandinavian village….
My instructions were for the words to be mumbled, semi coherent. Not a problem.
Huge thanks also to Malacky for his sublime bowed-bass.
Anchor up,
battered boat.
Head on and wait.
Cormorant,
catching light,
Heavy the weight.
Heading away,
under the lake.
Follow the line
Catching the eye
Shapes on the waves
Camera
Holding fire
Heavy the weight
Hidden away
Under the lake
Look again
Never there
Gone in the waves
Calm and row
Dark below
Heaving away
Breathing away
Under the lake

Great picking. Love the treatment of the vocals and the short poetic lines work great to leave the listener in suspense and to fill in the blanks of the story. I like how the arrangement continues to build and fill in as the song unfolds. The strings really give the feeling of waves and sea... and some darkness. Nice.

Blimey, missed these...lovely stuff guys

I'd never come up with these lyrics and whisper vocals. But I love them on top of this meditative guitar picking. Great!

Feels like someone dressed in black on the shore holding binoculars watching someone in a boat who is watching a cormorant. And the whole time I'm trying to figure out whether the watcher human is going to swoop down on the other one like a cormorant diving for a fish...Beautiful feeling...

Oh dear god, this is tremendous. That insistent acoustic picking is worth the price of admission alone. But then you also have both a beautiful melody and beautiful words from @adamdale78. 'Cormorant, catching the light, Heavy the weight.' I mean, that's just.... ughhhhh. Too good. Another amazing one from you, sir. Well done.

This is sooooo beautiful. Love the subtle build of the arrangement behind that stunning vocal melody. So many good sounds. Such a good piece of writing, and wonderful performances too.

damn this is AWESOME as well - not heard anything not awesome from you! such a simple lyric, but saying so so much. I agree with Fonte - this has tv/movie sync all over it.

Get OUTTA TOWN. This is f***ing brilliant. I wish I could write words like this mr @adamdale78 just the opening two lines are somehow brilliant in a way I don't fully understand but they really hit me and it's only 4 words! Beautifully played and sung. Lovely composition. Could listen all day. Lots of stuff on FAWM I could hear in films/TV but this would be perfect for some Scandi thriller (or a UK remake unless you want to translate it).
