Feb 2022 country humor needs-music
@vomvorton - Came up with (I think) a good title for a country song, wrote the lyric, considered recording it myself but:
a) whenever I attempt country people say "this isn't really country"
b) this would probably sound better with an american twang
c) I have a bunch of other things I'm still working on
edit: @hamiltonpoolhall is gonna have a go!
@hamiltonpoolhall And a go has been had! As per @vomvorton's suggestion, I did a light spot of editing for phrasing's sake and then cranked up my faux rockabilly trio – not exactly country, but not exactly not, if you see what I mean. The ending sort of crashed and burned, but upon listening back, it sounded exactly like how I feel when *I'm* hangry, so I left it.
Nerd details: Gibson ES 390, live brushes, Trillian for the upright.
Thanks to VV for posting this morning; I was overdue for a good frothy collab like this!
V1
I make a good impression on every person that I meet
except the people at the diner who see me before I eat
they wince as I order, each word could be their last
but I leave a hearty tip once I’ve broken my fast
C1
well you know me, my bark’s worse than my bite
but the balance can shift if I don’t satisfy my appetite
you wouldn’t like me when my blood sugar plummets
cos you can’t make empty threats on an empty stomach
V2
when I get home after work feeling peckish at the end of the night
you’d best hand me a snack before we get into a fight
I can be a flaming devil, I’m a creature of pure hate
but I become a pussycat once I’ve cleared my plate
C2
well you know me, my bark’s worse than my bite
but the balance can shift if I don’t satisfy my appetite
you wouldn’t like me when my hunger reaches a summit
cos you can’t make empty threats on an empty stomach
BRIDGE
I always make sure to have things that I can eat on the shelf
because it’s impossible to cook when you’re angry at yourself
and when I’m catering for others, it can get even worse
If I throw a dinner party, better skip the first course
C3
well you know me, my bark’s worse than my bite
but the balance can shift if I don’t satisfy my appetite
sing along if you like, if you don’t know the words you can hum it:
you can’t make empty threats on an empty stomach

hot damn that's a hangry solo at the end!
this is a fun tune! love the concept.
great delivery
my fav lines are:
I always make sure to have things that I can eat on the shelf
because it’s impossible to cook when you’re angry at yourself
what a lark! i love a good foodie song!

I have genre bias so I would say "this isn't really country" sounds like a compliment, but when you've got Hammy adding jazzy licks like this and such a smoky 50s atmosphere it's just irresistible. I love how even though there is no Vom on this recording (right?) it's possible to spot his influence in the lyrics a mile off.
(Just noticed "irresistible" ends with "ible" not "able". Like I'm not ible to resist it. wtf is that all about? #irrelevantspellingnonsense)
@bradbrubaker Feb 2022
I once dated a gal with whom I had an unspoken rule that never failed: "If she's a bit short verbally, find her a snack." This could've been the tune I happily whistled at the time if we could get the ol' time-space thing solved.
@shortdan Feb 2022
Nice to hear your voice again! This one's loads of fun. Vom's lyrics are top notch and you've done a great job with them. Great guitar work throughout of course. Proper nodding my head along to this. Ace!

So glad I revisited this. I had read the lyrics and commented when it was initially posted. Great to hear this put to music. Fun, fun, fun...Wonderful vibe to the music. Some awesome guitar playing, particularly after C2 and that bit of flash at the end. Seems like it was fun to collaborate on that, which is exactly how it should be!
@fearlessflight2014 Feb 2022
This is hilarious and I love all the musical details like the descending line on the word 'plummets'. You guys should do a whole album together! Awesome collaboration!!
@ndavies Feb 2022
Glad to hear this got a rendition. I like how the guitar line tumbles on "plummets"
@cowboydick Feb 2022
Love the guitar ... ending is classic. Fun from start to finish.
@rayboneor Feb 2022
Dang, Mr. Poolhall, that's some phenomenal guitar playing. This is pretty damned awesome. I don't want to get into an argument with @rubberbandage , especially not before I've had my lunch, but "peckish" sounds downright un-American to me, like putting on Wellies before heading out into the rain. I come from farming and ranching stock, but I've lived in the Anarchist Jurisdiction of Portland Oregon for over a quarter century, so maybe I'm out of touch with real America :)
@rubberbandage Feb 2022
This rockabilly treatment is spot-on, and (cowboy) hats off to the guitar work, all the way to the terrific end! And I must disagree with @rayboneor — “I’m feelin’ a mite peckish” is perfectly acceptable country vernacular!
@owl Feb 2022
What a great take on VV’s lyrics!
Perfectly twangy guitars and vocal delivery. The ending was cute! The lyrics are goofy and very relatable.
@paulh1237 Feb 2022
Love the backing vocals on the chorus. Great little guitar instrumental. Love the lyrical hook, and I am now very much hungry.
@richaaaay Feb 2022
Entertaining. The lyrics strike me as suitable for lots of genres, not just country.
@rayboneor Feb 2022
You should definitely record this yourself if no one else does. It certainly sounds like a VV lyric, kind of serious, kind of tongue in cheek. So what if it doesn't sound country. Ain't no way anybody's gonna sound country singing "peckish" anyway. I've been trying to parse the subtlety of the meaning here. At first I thought this person would have to eat before making empty threats. The genius here is that you've rather craftily implied that the threats made before eating won't be empty at all. Did I get that right? It's a clever sleight-of-hand right in plain sight
