My friend, Dave, is a pretty funny, happy-go-lucky guy with a great marriage. He's also a great songwriter who writes a some of the sweetest songs, and lot of dark and depressing songs, which I tease him about... constantly.
I figured I'd try and out dark him by writing the most dark, sad and depressing song I could, without delving into outright parody/comedy.
Now that i'm done, I'm going to go nurse another beer and cry myself to sleep, while hugging my pillow...
Another year older
Another journey ‘round the sun
Crying on a shoulder
On a day that’s supposed to be fun
You always said we were meant to be
If that were so, then why’d you go and leave
All that’s left for me to say
Is Happy birthday
To me
Now you’re gone
I’ve never been so alone
I try to call
But you never pick up your phone
You always said we were meant to be
If that were so, then why’d you go and leave
All that’s left for me to say
Is Happy birthday
To me
A year ago a part of both of us died
You stayed strong while I curled up and cried
We couldn’t save her even though both of us tried
I only wish that she had lived to see five
Your absence here
Is far from the last insult
Instead of presents
Is a letter with the test results
I always thought we were meant to be
I also thought that I was cancer free
All that’s left for me to say
Is Happy birthday
To me

Nazis Christ. Uh, that was an autocorrected Jesus Christ but in this context it feels right so I'm leaving it. You just destroyed my happy Hawaiian vacation vibe. Well done.

Completely agree with @bractune This just keeps getting darker. I kind of lost myself into that melody and your voce, but I woke up when you sung "I only wish that she had lived to see five". I had to go back and concentrate more properly, to really experience the sadness.
In all honesty, this beauty of the piano melody and your delicate vocals makes this also quite amusing. Really the darkness is created more by the lyrics. But regardless, I enjoyed this alot.

Whoa.....this song starts out dark, and just keeps getting darker. And darker. The break-up tune turns into a cancer and death song. Congrats, I think you have officially out-sadded me! I love the way the badass piano line comes in after the hook in the chorus. This is a really cool tune man.....you should write more downers. You obviously have a knack for it!
