I don't know. I just started singing in that (cutesy? annoying?) voice as soon as I hit "record." Made up the first stanza on the spot and extrapolated the rest from there. What does it mean? It's a mystery.
Paint it like it is
Paint outside the lines
Tell me what you want
I’ll let you decide
It’s a messy game
But I’m not going to lose
I paint my heart in pink and red
Cause I’m the one to choose
I want to show my face
But don’t look in my eyes
I’ll give you all you want
Just don’t expect surprise
I sat down on my bed
And peeled away the skin
I always look so messy now
But that’s the way you win

Ach, cutesy girl vocal sounds always win me over, although some of the Japanese girl rock groups challenge the limits of this.
This tune reminds me of one of my favorite bands, Deerhoof. With cutesy vocals and sometimes abstract sometimes angular but always challenging musical accompaniment.
Love the confrontational nature of that harmony in the middle, and the stabs of piano toward the end. This is a great recipe. If it's not normally your thing, maybe you should! And if you don't know Deerhoof, check this out:

I don't think the lyrics here are such big mystery! Even the "cutesy" voice is appropriate. I interpret the song as describing a person's trouble with merging the "war painting" actions of romance with her personal inner self. This of course, in varying degrees, is a problem for all of us! (And most so to teenagers listening to pop music.) I like the melody. I think there are room to expand on the happy, rhythmic and "sexy" delivery. That could build even more tension to the song, because the dilemma is still there, even more pronounced when "wrapped up in gold paper", for anyone bothering to listen to the words. :-)
P.S. Don't waste to much time "polishing" things! You have detected here for your self how much good stuff intuition can bring about. I often times just start by finding some good chords and start singing something poignant. "I went out and killed a man"... I had no idea of what would be happening next, but something developed! I cannot be spontaneous like this. If the lyrics aren’t carefully written down, I just stutter and stammer :)
I really liked the keyboard in this. A pretty happy melody in a song of selfdoubt, but I loved it!!!
