Feb 2022 guy-and-a-parlour-guitar getting old
The old hippy in me is still struggling to come to terms with ageing... or is he?
(G) They say growing (Am) old
You can't circum(G)vent
But remaining (Am) young
Is still my in(G)tent
You can't fight the (C) years
My friends all in(G)sist
But the light in me's (D) bright
With a guitar in my (G) fist
Why can't I (C) learn to face the (G) truth?
My hair is all (D) gray
I'm not that spotty (G) youth
I look in the (C) mirror
But I hide from the (G) proof
I live the old (D) lie without any re(G)proof
(G) I tell you rock and (Am) roll
Is what keeps me (G) young
I write out my (Am) dreams
But my songs are un(G)sung
I dress like the (C) hippy
I was at eight(G)een
I know I should show (D) wisdom
But I still feel so (G) green
CHORUS
BRIDGE
There's (Bm) one thing I've learnt
It's alright to live a (Am) lie
If (Bm) keeping up that pretence
En(C)sures you never want to (D)die
(G) So is death a (Am) lesson
That I need to (G) learn?
Or just one more (Am) bridge
That I'll need to (G) burn?
You may think I'm a (C) fool
To not accept growing (G) old
But every second I (D) get
I want to be solid (G) gold
So why should I (C) learn to face the (G) truth?
My hair is all (D) gray
I'm no spotty (G) youth
I look in the (C) mirror
At my eyes bright with (G) light
If you want me to ma(D)ture
I'll put up a good (G) fight

Totally relatable! As I listen to this I think about your earlier song “walking in the hills” thinking that I am hiking slower and when I come home from a hike I am icing my knees and taking ibuprofen. I like your comment about songwriting - the dreams and chance to live our feelings of youth. Great song - makes me both smile and sigh.

you are never old until all your friends are dead.

Wow, man, like far out and right on. I'm hip to what you're rappin'. Peace Brother.

Again seems like a timeless class. Love the stops. Like this lilting rhythm.

NIce write. Great story told with powerful chords and melody, yearning and real. Nicely done.

As a person who doesn’t fear death… and has been known to write more than one song on the subject of longing for it, I can’t really identify… other than with the getting old and grey, of course. But, it’s super-catchy and great work for an hour, and will be identifiable for loads of people (who aren’t weirdos, like I am).

I have to love a song that says “I should show wisdom” while showing a great deal of wisdom. The melody sits very easily over the chords making this a comfortable listen.

As they say, it's better than the alternative! My mum always says she's proud of growing old disgracefully... seems to be the right way to me.
@andygriff Feb 2022
I like this a lot, thoughtful and catchy! Great work :)
