Feb 2022 country-folk
Another song, written this morning. Just a quick version recorded on my mobile phone.
It needs a bit more work but I think it's almost there now. Heavily influenced by the clouds of war that encircle us today as I write. The opening line was borrowed from James Joyce's Ulysses (partly inspired by another FAWMer who unknoingly referenced his Molly Bloom!)
Weirdly, I played this as a slower version but it is slightly shorter than my first recording which I thought I played a lot faster but that's some weird space-time continuum thing that I won't try to comprehend just now. WIll re-record this one later - this is just a fresh demo, straight out of the pan..
NO FOOLS
[Capo on 1]
Am C G7 Am
Come upstairs you fearful Jesuit and let me shave your head
There is no God in heaven he's all but nearly dead
The bad boys run this show now and refuse to go to bed
You broke their toys
And made some noise
But they're living in your head
Go home my wistful daughters there's no loving for you here
The whisky's sure been watered and there's sugar in the beer
I can't come home yet darling because I wouldn't dare be near
all those dark clouds overhead
And the chat we had in bed
Has been stuck inside my head, all year
Run away my pretty aunties because its safer for you there
There is no time to pick a dress or stop to wash your hair
Your father is away in town and he hasn't got a care
He took the girls
With their braids and curls
And Dollie's chestnut mare
[instrumental verse]
Oh mother stop your crying, for there is no moon or sun
There are monsters on the doorstep so father grab your gun
I'd travel far to be with you if I hadn't already come
but it's no good here
there is no fear
or sane words on my tongue
[instrumental verse]
There are tanks in lines on Main Street and soldiers in the hall
I can't really make their armour out through all this fog n all
But I heard the gunshots ringing and I heard the General call
all day is night
all wrong is right
there are no fools at all at all
there are no fools at all

Real feeling to this. Captures the uncertain times that we are living in. It suits the simple instrumentation.
