Knock on wood
This table has become our battlefield
Of broken dreams
And stale promises
A far off space too close for comfort
Knock on wood
I’ve never been happy here
Knock on wood
Even though I let you in
You carved your name in my heart
And taken the kindle to make a bon fire
And baby did it burn
Burn you and me
Third degree wounds
I did not know wood could bleed
This table has become our graveyard
Of ghosts past and present
Scratching on coffin lids
Skeletons rotting in tattered rags
Knock on wood
There was never any life here
Knock on wood
Even though that is how everything begins
Chop it down
Saw it open
Prune the excess
And strip the dry leaves bare
Our knuckles are peeling skin
Nerves exposed, dry and flaking thin

This is so powerfully emotional and poignant - how love can change and the pain and scars that can be left behind. Your use of language is strong and concise with images that illustrate the depths of love and the darkness of change. Wonderfully concise vivid lines for an intensely sad feeling sentiment.
