Feb 2022 folk pop country country-folk indie-folk capo-challenge acoustic
This song has quite a story. My late grandmother wrote these lyrics. She passed away in 2012. It's kind of amazing that we've written a song together. I've only changed a few words to make it sing a bit easier.
I'd started writing a song to these lyrics years ago but never finished. My mother asked a while back if I would finish the song. I thought, "FAWM is a great opportunity to get a version of this song down." So here it is!
I tried a few different keys before I settled on D. This went through several iterations before I landed on a simple strumming pattern, letting go of all the guitar licks and riffs. The left guitar is standard tuning and the right guitar is capo'd at the 7th.
If you want to know more about the story behind my grandmother's lyrics I've taken a photo of the paper my mother gave me.
Verse 1
I wished for a rainbow
A sign of God’s promise
With colors bright in hue
I wished for a rainbow
A sign of God’s presence
I wished this rainbow for me and you
God sent my rainbow
With no drop of rain
Not a cloud in the sky
God sent my rainbow
Held me, so tender
A sign I’d be with Him, bye and bye
Chorus
You see God’s rainbow
I share it with you
These tears you see I share them too
For God heard my prayer
And sent us a rainbow
He also sent good friends, such as you
Verse 2
That we have life
Abundantly given
That no thief can steal or destroy
God gave me faith
And the rainbow I prayed for
Sent me good friends, He restored my joy
We see all God’s wonders
His hands all around us
Feel God’s love with us, wherever we go
We’ll always remember
The moments God gave us
Joy that was shared, when I wished for a rainbow

Makes me wish I knew your Grandma. Such a touching collaboration. This song is evergreen...need I say more?

This is an awesome story! Love the acoustic tones you've got going on. You definitely did this justice, feels like classic melody. Such a cool thing to do. Well done!

I'd say you did it justice!
Personally, I would never have known that the lyrics and music were written at different times. They're a great match.
