Feb 2022 folk
First thing I've come up with in a week! Dropped the b string to an A and had a simple new tuning that got me writing again.
Lost Highways
Storm clouds appear
Dark horizon draws near
Fierce orange flash
Pouring streams down the dash
I can still hear you laugh
Still hear you laugh
Every thought that I hide
Like a cold wind inside
Raw, unkind to the flesh
Open wound of regret
My torn mosquito net
Is this all we have left?
Chorus:
Clear the turnpike
Chase that last exit sign
Through lost highways
As dark as your eyes
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye…
High beams in the rearview mirror
As the freeway disappears
Won’t you drive me somewhere?
White lines in the rain
So glad you came
Good to have someone else I can blame
Chorus:
Your black hole of need
My angel of sympathy
That I wear on my sleeve
Can you hear tires scream
Skid marks across our dreams
Is this what it means to be free?
Chorus:
Clear the turnpike
Chase that last exit sign
Lost highways
As dark as your eyes
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye…

Solo guitar is really nice and expressive. I enjoyed how your vocal had a little burr in it-as though the singer is so weary and melancholy.

I love how tunings inspire songs. Excellent guitar playing - smooth and filling in all the right places. Really powerful lyrics. Beautifully sad. Really good good bye song - super emotive and well performed. Great listen!

I love your style of picking. There is so much beauty emotion and complexity. And the vocal harmonising. Great stuff.

Great imagery. Very authentic. Nice.

This is beautiful. Those skidmarks across our dreams. So many concrete images and then all the emotion that hovers around them. Love the way you play and sing it. It's a feel-good gut wrencher.

I could've sworn I commented on this before -- I definitely listened to it! Love all the rhymes (and near rhymes) in the verses. I can see the highway that this is taking place on. And I especially like "Your black hole of need/My angel of sympathy" and all of those goodbyes in the chorus.

I can feel the rain and see the lightning. This is such an incredible vibe all round. Your picking and singing are first rate and they uplift the sad story.

Nice write: the storm-laden highway makes such a great metaphor. Lovely dissonances in the accompaniment, and a tasty solo / interlude.
